Archiever and RAR files

PowerArchiever 6.03
UltimateZip 26

I can open a RAR file with WinImp. The same file does not open in either PA or UZ
above.

All of them have the same unrar.dll, 5/15/03 in their folder. WinImp works, the
other 2 do not. IZArc will do it, but I prefer these ones. Each is supposed to
work with RAR files.

Advice to get PA and UZ to open RAR files?

Isn't this one pretty ancient?

Newer versions of RAR has introduced new features not backwards compatible
with older versions of RAR or programs supporting older versions of RAR.

Unless there are newer versions of PA or UZ which may open new RAR files you
should look into other archive programs. Personally i prefer TugZip.

Did you try the latest versions? Ultimate zip is up to version 3.0 and
Powerarchiever is up to 9.07. The rar files may have been made by a newer
version of winrar.

Your versions of PowerArchiever and UltimateZip were written for an
older version of the Unrar.dll. They still work with the newer *.dll,
but they call the old functions like RAROpenArchive and RARReadHeader
which are still supported by the *.dll (compatibility). The current
version of WinImp, OTOH, calls new functions like RAROpenArchiveEx and
RARReadHeaderEx. These are *additionally* present inside the Unrar.dll
and provide support for newer Rar archives.

Won't work with old versions...

Thanks to all, I better look at a newer UZ, a newer PA is not freeware.

That's a very lucid explanation. Thank you BeAr. :)

I'm not satisfied by 'it doesn't work'. I need to unterstand, *why*. Most
people think this way, I suppose. ;-)

That was very helpful, and thanks. An update:
Ultimate Zip 3 has a newer unrar.dll and worked with the rar files. I replaced the
existing older dll with the newer dll in UZ 2.6 and PA 6... no luck. (?)
Would have thought that would be enough to do it.
IzArc worked with it, if it IMO didn't make so many mistakes, I'd use it more.

IzArch...mistakes, do you mean problem archiving dll's under win98?

from: <http://www.izsoft.dir.bg/news_izarc.htm>
version 3.5 beta 1:
"Fixed problem archiving .dll files under Windows 98"
See above page for other things fixed.

Current ver. is 3.5 beta 2.

(boy that site was slow today...)

All the best,

No, I mean when creating archives, frequently it defaulted to an explorer tree
view, saying it didn't want to work with those files, this on files that should be
no problem for IZ. Others have used the adjective "immature", I use ver. 3.4.1.6,
and it still has problems.
