I am modifying an Excel file that I recieved from my Client. I was
able to edit the file without problems until recently. Now when I
open the file, make even the slightest change, save as a new file,
close out of the file, and then try to open the file again, I get the
following error message:
AppName: excel.exe
AppVer: 10.0.6832.0
ModName: excel.exe
ModVer: 10.0.6832.0
Offset: 0006e3fc
The file makes Excel crash and then it recovers the file but all the
formating is gone.
My client is using Excel 2003
I have Excel 2002 SP3.
Is there anything I can do to eliminate whatever is causing Excel to
crash so that I can modify the file as it is?

You may want to try OpenOffice.org and try opening, then saving (as a new
name). It's been known to save some (not always all) data, formatting, and
code.

http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD

Interesting. I am still able to open an older version of the file,
but when I make changes, then save as a new file, that is when Excel
crashes. If I were to download OpenOffice, and succeed in opening the
file, I'm not sure the file would be fixed so that my Client and his
associates would be able to open it in their Excel programs. Are you
saying that if I open the file in OpenOffice and save it as a new
file, then open it again in Excel 2002 it may be fixed?

Yep. I'm saying it MAY be fixed.

The key word is MAY. It may not, too.

Dave, you were right. I think it has something to do with disabling
macros and/or searching for links to other files which it didn't ask
me before when it was crashing. Now I seem to be able to save the
file as compatable with Excel 97/2000 and it works. Thank you so much.

I'm confused. Dave mentioned using OpenOffice. Where did links and macros
come into play? What was the actual resolution? I have the exact same
problem with MANY in house Excel files and after two weeks I am beat! I
even reloaded one of the machines and it has the same problem.

I tried OpenOffice and that didn't help. BTW, OpenOffice without Java is
96MB.

Please help, I'm in the same boat :(
