I've seen this happen with ungrouped charts and things. Try not selecting
anything on the slide, then you can hit the Tab key on your keyboard to move
through each object on the slide. I suspect the map has become so small you
can't see it.
You may need to create a new slide with appropriate layout and copy/paste
the map from the original slide to the new one. I've seen these problem
objects blow up (or "disappear") when you do that, also, though, so it may
not work.
If that's the case, right-click the object and copy, then Edit | Paste
Special as a WMF or EMF and try ungrouping that. If all else fails, Paste
Special as a PNG. At least you'll have an image of the object then, but it
will of course no longer be editable.
I've no idea what causes this and why it happens on some objects but not
others.
You could try round-tripping through HTML. I can't recall if I've tried that
on any of my files with these types of problem graphics....

I have an editable map on a blank slide. When I try to apply a layout to
it,
the map disappears altogether. Even if reapply a "blank" layout, the map
is
no longer on the page. Any ideas here?
I have several different slides with this same map, different states
highlighted, and applying the layout does the exact same thing. It just
completely removes the map. Other objects do remain on the page, such as
text
boxes or legends.
