apply new template to existing file

Hitherto, I've been applying a new template to an existing file by
copying all the styles with Organizer (saying Yes to All overwrites),
but I don't find a way to also transfer the margin settings and
headers. There must be an automatic way to assign a new template!

Create a new document based on the template and insert your file into it.

D'oh! But then I lose the Create Date of the file.

Does Insert > Object > Text from File yield the overriding of the old
styles by the new ones? Would Copy-Paste be better?

There is no function difference between Insert and Copy/Paste. And if you
want the entire format of the template (all the document-level formatting as
well as the styles), then attaching the template won't work.
