applications load twice

when launching microsoft applications (ie word, excel,
etc) i receive a message that the application is already
open and do i want to make a copy (ms word 97) or opening
twice will cause loss of data (ms excel 97).
how can this be stopped?

Possibly reinstall office or ask in office.setup
