Application lockup problems

Hi,

Recently I've been experiencing problems with my usually 100% reliable and
dependable system. I've not installed anything notable or changed anyway
hardware recently. Problems encountered include:

a) Image applications stopped responding when I tried to save. Had to reboot
in order to get it to work

b) After a reboot, I am unable to connect to the internet for about 1-2
minuites. Attempting before this brings up an error that my modem is either
in use, or not configured properly. 1-2 minuites later, it works fine. I use
a Diamond SupraExpress 56e Pro.

c) ICQ will often stop responding when I click a URL link

d) mIRC will often stop responding when I click a URL link

e) Task manager will occasionally load a system tray icon, but not load the
actual task manager. Clicking the system tray icon does nothing to fix the
problem.

f) Start menu sometimes takes ages to actually appear, usually when I go
into my Games folder. It will sit there with a large grey box, roughly the
size it should be, but no icons until 10 seconds of disk thrashing.

A reboot usually fixes all of these, but sooner or later, it happens again.
I've got a virus scanner with up to date definitions. I have an XP3000+,
Abit NF7-S and 1Gb of Corsair XMS3200LL, so my machine should not be
sluggish at all. The most common problem is the applications hanging when I
click a hyperlink. Anything that isnt IE - ie mIRC, ICQ, MSN, if I click a
link in one of those applications, the application will lock up. I got this
from the event viewer from a crash by MIRC:

'Hanging application mirc32.exe, version 5.9.1.0, hang module hungapp,
version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.'

Any ideas? I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1, and I've got the latest virus
definitions for Norton etc. I had a look but can't so anything dodgy running
processes wise.

Thanks.
