Application Error - The Memory Could Not Read

E

Edna

WXP Pro V2002, SP3, CPU 3.60 GHz, 2.00 GB RAM.
When opening Mailwasher I get a Window:

Mailwasher.exe - Application Error
The instructions at "0x00462b9f" referenced memory att "0.0000004". The
memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program. doesn't work

Note the exact same nbrs appear each time Mailwasher is opened.
I've ran Malwarebytes many times. It discovered one problem:
Rogue.Installer on a free program I downloaded but didn't install called NI
Registry Helper from Download.com and too Rogue.Link on the desktop shortcut
for Download.com; I've also ran Blacklight, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster,
EasyCleaner, JV Power Tools, Registry Repair Pro, Online Housecall Micro
Trends - took 3 days to get the scan then it identified my SSprint for my
Samsung Printer as a "Freeloader_Roings",
Online Kapersky - Nil.
This error has appeared on only one other program, NTI Shadow a backup
program which bears a different nbr: 0x74989863 at Memory 0x00000030.

Other than the Rogue.Installer found by Malwarebytes, none of the other
Scans found anything and I'm now thinking that the Rogue.Installer has
nothing to do with the "Application.exe Memory Could not read" error.

Java.com has a lengthy solution to a problem with installing Java relating
to an old Install Shield Engine but their solution is only for WXP SP2 no
solution for SP3.

The MS KB has numerous mentions to a related problem but not this one and
they say unless it's exactly the same, not to use their solution.

Someone must have had this problem opening a program and found a solution.
I hope because I'm now at a loss. Is it possible to reinstall SP3 although
this problem just started happening three days ago.

Any suggestions would sure be appreciated. Thx ...

I've uninstalled and reinstalled mailwasher four times but failed to get rid
of this Memory could not be found error.

Try uninstalling Mailwasher, reboot, then run MalwareBytes and see if it
finds anything. Download and install AVG Free and run it. Run MalwareBytes
again. If they both come back clean, disconnect from the internet, shutdown
any 3rd party firewall and anti-virus/anti-spyware programs you may be
running, and re-install Mailwasher.

If you have System Restore enabled, you may be able to restore your Windows
files to what they were before you started having this problem, but that
won't fix any other files that may have become corrupted.

If you have SP3 on CD, you can re-install it if you want, but I don't think
that's where your problem lies if you weren't having problems with it
before.

Thx Tom, I'll attend to these tonight. re Malwarebytes (mbam) it doesn't say
what the Paid Version contributes. Also the Paid version of AVG. Any
Advice on this?

Re: Services ... There are 10 Services set on Manual which, when I
Shutdown/Reboot then look immediately at Services, these 10 Services are
showing that they have "Started". I've tested this a few times and it's
always the same Manual settings that indicate they've Started.

In my limited knowledge it appears to me that these 10 particular Services
should therefore be set on Automatic. Of course it would help if I listed
the Services and will in a future Post if u wish and feel it's somewhat
related to the Memory could not be read problem.

This problem started the same date I installed the updated Ad-Aware
Anniversary 2009 version. May not be related of course but ... in a now
deleted Trend Micro log there were numerous like 20/30 entries indicating
Ad-Aware Call Backs and labelled a Threat. Wish i could give the exact
wording but they were so numerous, line after line, that I decided to
uninstall the new Ad-Aware and reinstall the version I had been using but
don't want to until this problem is solved.

Well, I ran into the same problem with updating to Anniversary Edition. I
uninstalled AdAware completely, then installed the Anniversary edition and
it worked just fine. There seemed to be a problem with the internal
uninstall/install procedure.

I used free versions of both MBAM and AVG when I was troubleshooting Zone
Alarm. They seem to be quite robust for a freebie. Found stuff on my HDD
that ZA didn't. Go figure!

I'd leave the manual services set at manual. Once you have everything
working properly again, they may not all be necessary all the time. You can
post a list of them if you like. I'd compare them to mine, but I have a
bunch of mine set to manual anyhow that used to be automatic.

Rather than burden u, I just posted my Services in a separate Post "Services
-Manual Settings"
I'm still working on your instructions. I'm still Clean so next stage is to
Disconnect and Reinstall Mailwasher.
I uninstalled Mailwasher, Rebooted or shutdown maybe both.
Did MBAM Full System Scan. results: Nil
I uninstalled Norton Security 2008 using Norton's Uninstall Program for 2008.
I both Rebooted and Shutdown.
I Installed AVG Free Version 8.0.
Ran AVG Full Scan. Results NIL.
Ran MBAM Full Scan. Results: NIL

As they're both Clean Scans (when I say Clean I mean no Warnings/Threats -
nothing)
I'll now Disconnect?? (Do I just unplug the Router?) LOL
I'll Shutdown AVG
Firewall - My WXP Firewall is "OFF" as I haven't enabled it yet after
uninstalling Norton.
Does AVG have a Firewall in the Free Version - I didn't read any reference
to a Firewall so I guess not.
I'm hoping to start on this right now but ...

Tom, What's your Address? I'm gonna send you a well earned Gold Star!
I didn't want to Post that MW was working right away until I was as sure as
I can be that it really was working, in case I lost you!

I've had MW installed for a few hours, opened/closed/rebooted/shutdown so
much so I thought I'd end up corrupting it again. It's working perfectly.
Unfortunately, whatever that error is caused by, is still in existence as it
appeared once today when opening my External Drive BKU Software. Just hope
it doesn't find MW again.

This dated BKU program came with the HD so I'd like buy new BKU software -
any suggestions?

IMO it's not an outside source that invaded my computer. There's a lot
written in the MS KB but not the same as this that I could tell through
burning eyes. I know I didn't cover all that was written - also on Java.com
but it doesn't reference SP3.

I really like this AVG AntiVirus freebie. Moreso than Norton Internet
Security 2008 although I've read their 2009 has been well recvd. I'll try
AVG for a couple weeks and if I still like it I'll buy the Program.

Given a day or so rest and I'll give Lavasoft Ad-Aware Anniversary another
try as I've got 2 yrs left on my 3 yr Sub. You said u thought it was a
problem of the program uninstalling the old and installing the new. I
installed mine that way too.
I didn't like it as much as the old version.

You use ZA! I used it immediately when they issued V7.0 mid Jan07. I should
have waited a month or so for adjustments as I was on the ph for hours with
my ISP (they provided it) but ended up formatting. It was a problem on my
computer with a Kapersky file(s).

Tom, u did GOOD! REAL GOOD! Thank You So Very Much! ... Edna
