Application Error box

After trying to download an updated version of Spyware Doctor, an
'Application Error' box appeared on screen which says, "The instruction at
blah blah referenced memory at blah blah. The memory could not be read".
Then the message in the box says "Click on OK to terminate the program" or
"Click on CANCEL to debug the program".
Now, when I click on either OK or CANCEL, nothing happens and the box just
stays on screen. Also, since this problem, my computer will not shut down in
the normal way and it's like shutting down the computer with a program open
when I "force" it to close by keeping the laptop power on/off button
depressed for several seconds.
When I start up the computer again, I get the "One of your disks needs
checking for consistency" rigmarole.

Hi,

Have you run error checking on the drive yet? That'd be the first step. You
might also run System Restore if it hasn't been too long yet and a point
from before this problem still exists.

Hi,
Thanks for your message Rick. Yes, it was too late for System Restore. Could
you tell me how I run error checking on the drive?
Thanks,
Best regards,

Greetings,

To use ScanDisk in Windows XP, follow the steps below:

1. Double Click My Computer
2. Right click on the hard disk you want to check for errors
3. Click Properties
4. Select the "Tools" tab
5. Under "Error Checking", click "Check Now"

Hi,

Try this: Click start/run, type cmd and click ok. Then run this from the
prompt:

chkdsk c: /r

After this one, you will see the following:

"The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would
you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"

Enter "Y" to agree, then exit the cmd prompt and reboot the system.

Well Hi, Rick Rogers and Jose Francisco and thanks for the suggestions to
disk check. I've done this but alas, still no luck! Thanks once again anyway.
I'm still open to more ideas, anybody?

Hi,

Is the system still shutting down incorrectly?
Is the attempt to install the software still incurring error messages?
Or both?

This is a common error from a system running low on CPU via the Page File
and third party processes taking what the system needs to function properly.
Probably why you are needing to run the program you can't install.)

Suggestions, after a clean boot, open the Task Manager and watch over the
system idle time and also check the Performance Tab/Commit Charge.

In the meantime:

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, CWShredder and HijackThis:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Note: Update the first two programs, once installed, before running.

Free Online Virus Scan

Then:

Go to Start/Run and type in: cmd
Once there: fsutil dirty query c:
(Modify the drive letter accordingly)

If it comes back as dirty, it hasn't cleared.

Option: From a command prompt type chkntfs /D and then reboot, a chkdsk
should run but not again on next boot.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for replying, once again. I've stopped trying to download the
software for the moment. Regarding shutting down, if I press Alt + F4, the
Application Error Box will go off, then come back on as the computer is
shutting down. Then I have to press Alt + F4 again and then sometimes again
and again as the Error Box can be quite stubborn in going off. Then
eventually it will stay off until the computer finally goes off - only to
return once the computer is back on again. As long as I go through this
procedure when shutting down, I do not get that, "one of your disks needs
checking for consistency" after I start-up the computer again.
