Applets do not display correctly in IE7

This problem occurs on Facebook (amongst other sites) On FB, at the bottom
Right hand corner is a field that should show a symbol for 'notifications'
and another symbol for the 'chat' window. Neither of these symbols are
visible. This problem sometimes occurs on other sites, where i cannot see the
'search' field, or the 'go' button.
Have cleared temp internet files, cookies etc all to no avail.
have run a java test and this says all is running fine and that i have the
latest versions etc of it.
can anyone point me in the right direction on this please!!
