I installed Apple's Quick Time Player on my XP system since it
seemed the only way to view some videos my son-in-law posted but
I am getting very tired of the frequent "updates" and the way,
every time, Apple tries to sneak in the I-tunes player that I
*don't* want!

If son in law can't use another format, try quick time alternative.

Thanks, he was a very new Apple user but I think he's getting a
bit more sophisticated :). Thanks also for the suggestion of
the alternative; I'll investigate.

Here you can opt to download just Quicktime:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html

In QuickTime's Preferences, you can uncheck the Check for Updates option.

My perennial gripe with QT is that every time I upgrade it, it fails to pay
attention to the previous preferences - especially installing itself to the
taskbar. I seldom launch it directly, I launch qt or mov files.

Thanks, I did that and we will see what happens. The major
trouble was that I got an update popup whether or not I was
using QuickTime.

Also look to see if Apple Updater is installed - you can also set that to
not check. Ideally, turn it off all together, or uninstall it if you don't
want it.

I installed the QuickTime Standalone version and have had NOT problems with
updates.
