Please do NOT start a religious war here, you know better than to do
that. ;-)

Regardless of your smiley, Carey really doesn't know better. That's
why those of us who are familiar with his posts just ignore him. He's
certainly a blight on the term "MVP".

That's a no brainer. Buy the MAC OSX machine if money is not an issue. If
money is an issue, then purchase an intel based laptop and install Linux on
it.

Of course you would recommend buying a MAC machine over a Windows one.
We all know you HATE Windows.

But...here it comes.....
Last choice - buy Windoze and your friend can spend many fun filled
hours trying to keep the machine running without problems, malware,
trojans, viruses and worms. It seems to be an amusing passtime, as you'll
quickly find out reading the posts in this newsgroup.

And your hatred manifests itself. I've used XP since it was released
and never have any problems. No viruses, no worms, no
adware/malware/spyware. If you watch what you are doing and where you
are surfing, this is very easy to accomplish.

That's like telling kids if you don't kiss during sex you can't get
pregnant!

People don't watch where they do, they get redirected easily, they get
compromised because they have a network/file sharing at home and forget
to disable it when they take the laptop to another network, they forget
patches......

If a tech type asked what computer to get, a Windows based computer
would be the first answer, but a person with no tech skills in a Apple
environment, would do best with an Apple.

So what she's looking at is a Powerbook vs... what?

As far as the networking aspect (esp wireless,) that is a point in the
Apple's direction. I'm dealing with a wireless network here, and my XP
machine will occasionally decide it doesn't want to use the connection, but
pick one from across the street or somewhere - which I've told it
specifically not to use.

Heavily into digital photography - the major software programs run on both
Mac and Windows. iPhoto's nice, but it sounds like she'd outstrip it.

My suggestion, take her to an Apple store (or independant Apple retailer)
nearby, and take her to Best Buy or wherever. See which ones (a) look better
to her (not aesthetics, but the screen,) and (b) feel better. Yes, you can
use a third party keyboard and mouse, yes addons are simple plug-in-and-go
affairs, but you have to be happy with the base unit.

Also... when you do go, don't help. Let her see how fast she figures out how
to do things on the PC and on the Mac. Whatever she's most comfortable with
is what she should get.
