Appears to sleep after restart

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000. I fotmated my C drive and
used my recovery disk to load Win98. I then did a clean
load of XP. All is perfect except if I click on 'restart'
the machine shutsdown but screen stays black. I can access
the laptop from network but I have to power off the
computer and power back on to get to login screen.

Thanx
Bob

I'm curious why you didn't boot fromt he Windows Xp installation CD-ROM and make
it a totally XP machine? Everyone has reasons for doing things, but I'm still
curious.

Well the sales person said that because it was an upgrade
I had to have an operating system loaded on or pay double
the price for a full xp version.

Hi,

Just information: In order to do a clean installation with the upgrade disk,
it must either "see" the qualifying installation (Win98 one the system
already), or "see" the qualifying media (IE: The Win98 CD). If your Win98
media is a "System Restore" disk, then it is in an image format that will
not be readable by the WinXP Upgrade disk, therefore you must install it to
the system first so it can be seen.

Either way, if you choose to do a clean install of WinXP, once it sees the
Win98 qualifier, it will totally remove it and do the clean installation,
same as the WinXP Full version.

As to your problem, you are missing a supporting driver for one or more of
the laptop devices. Check with the manufacturer for any needed ones to
support the system under WindowsXP. Be aware that your manufacturer may
recommend that you do not install a retail version of WindowsXP on your
system. Be aware that they may not support your system under WinXP, and
therefore are under no obligation to provide driver updates. In general,
laptops are best used with the Operating System they come with.
