Appearanceeffects in control panel

When I try to select the effects button under appearance in the display
panel from control panel nothing will come up. Although when I click the
advanced tab just below it, it does come up. What gives? Any have any ideas
to this? I am trying to change the setting for font smoothing which is
located in there.

I lost my Effects tab via a program called Desktop Architect. Haven't
yet used the program, have read that removing it doesn't return the
tab.

You'll find a font smoothing option in control panel \ system \
advanced \ performance ... settings: "smooth edges of screen fonts".
