Apostrophes and speech marks in Word

I'm a bit of a novice so please excuse my ignorance! At least I know I'm
using Vista!

So I'm in Word and I'm typing a sentence and I want to put the word <cat> in
inverted commas. If I type <'> then <c> it turns it into <ç> and the only way
I seem to be able to get around this is to type <'> then <spacebar> then
<cat> then <'> then <spacebar> which seems like a lot of effort to try and
write 'cat' (which might I add I can do without issue in this text box). <'>
and <a> becomes <á> and <'> and <i> becomes <í> ... I have a similar issue
with speech marks.

This is driving me nuts!

What am I doing wrong? Is it related to the language bar? My language is set
to English - United States International but even if I change it to English -
US it seems to do the same. I've looked at the autocorrect options and I
can't see them in there but if that is the case I don't want to find every
possible combination and delete it!

Help me please!!

1. Open Help and Support
2. Type 'Speech' in the Search box
3. From 30 Best results click the link for 5. "Dictate text using Speech"
4. Click the link "Correcting dictation mistakes"
5. Follow provided instructions

Yes, this is the behavior of the "US international" keyboard - certain key
combinations with quote marks and also the right-hand Alt key are used to
produce accented characters. It's very useful if you are typing documents in
certain languages like French or Spanish but can be frustrating otherwise.
You can remove it from Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options and go
back to the regular US keyboard.
