Apostrophe/Quotation Marks

Hi,
This may sound anal but I have a situation with a brand new HP Pavilion
computer which I think is caused by my version of Windows XP. This is my
second computer that has the XP operating system my first one did not have
the following problem. When typing on my keyboard whenever I hit the
apostrophe/quotation mark key the cursor does not advance or indicate my
keystroke on the screen as it does with any other character until another
keystroke is made. If I hit it 4 times in succession it still does not move
the cursor until another keystroke is made in which case it advances 4
keystrokes. I thought it might have been the keyboard so I plugged in my
Microsoft keyboard from my old computer and it did the same thing. I then
installed the Intellitype software and drivers for my old keyboard and still
no change. This is driving me nuts. Is there a fix for this problem or do
I have to learn to live with it? Thanks in advance for any help.

You are using US International keyboard. This is for doing accents, umlauts, et al.

Creating International Characters
When you press the APOSTROPHE (') key, QUOTATION MARK (never heard of this one - they must mean Inverted Commas) (") key, ACCENT GRAVE (`) key, TILDE (~) key, ACCENT CIRCUMFLEX key, or CARET (^) key, nothing appears on the screen until you press a second key. If you press one of the letters designated as eligible to receive an accent mark, the accented version of the letter appears. If you press the key of a character that is not eligible to receive an accent mark, two separate characters appear.

Thank you,
I switched to US From US International and it corrected my situation.

In MS Word you can always enter these characters by pressing Ctrl + whatever then the letter.

Thank you - This was driving me crazy. Another reason to hate Microsoft - nothing in Help explains this behavior. Who knew that my computer was set up this way except the corporate computer "?expert" who set it up for me!!!
