apostrophe and inverted commas do not show directly

I use XP. When I type something in Word or Star office
text program I have this problem that apostrophe and
inverted commas do not show directly. Only after repeating
the keystroke does this appear. Alternatively I must use
the space bar. Does anyone know the case of this strange
anomaly?

Your keyboard layout has got set as 'US (International)' which uses this
dead key effect for accented characters. For example if you type ' then
e you will get é - if ~ then n you will get ñ

In Control Panel - Regional and Language, on the Languages page click
Details. If some other layout is not already on offer, click add and
add a new instance, using the same base language (eg English (US) but a
different layout. Then after OK, select that combination as Default and
OKK out, clicking Apply wherever it is on Offer, and logout and back
