When I type inverted commas I have to hit space bar to show

Word doesn't seem to show inverted commas properly. I have to hit space bar
to get them to show on the screen. Sometimes they appear as European
charaters ö.

You have an international keyboard layout selected (this causes the " to be
a setup key for umlauted vowels). In Windows Control Panel, select a US or
UK keyboard instead.
