Hello All,

Firstly I apologies for re-posting this type of question but I am really
getting desperate now. I can access all website from AOL but almost none from
IE6.
I can't use Win Media Player on-line or use MSN IM.
I'm running win XP SP1, I can't upgrade to SP2 as that requires a working
IE. I use a Connexant router modem and a shared connection, the other
connected people have no problems. This use to all work fine. I don't recall
downloading any updates (don't really do that)

I have tried the following;

1) Rebuiilt AOL
2) Reinstalled AOL
3) Quick restore AOL
4) WinXP system restore
5) Rebuild the registry
6) Checked HOST file
7) Attempted to repair IE
8) In place upgrade of WIN XP
9) Played with all the internet options
10) Downloaded loads of help/fix software
11) Uninstalled any wall software (firewalls, anti-virus, pop up blockers)
12) Reinstall IE, but that failed as it needed to connect to MS.com

I still have the WinXP cd-rom is there any way I can get rid of IE on my
machine and sort of totally re-install it, or Windows. Or download a
different version of IE but not from microsoft.com as that doesn't work.
I don't really want to get rid or my machine...but I'm desperate to get it
working again..I've been trying for so long.

This is my opinion and only mine and others might disagree. Although the below does not address your present issue (maybe others will be able to help) I cannot in all honesty try to say what to do because with AOL on your system there could be a number of issues to be looked at.

AOL =Hell. Aol is proprietary and takes over you operating system

If I were you I would get rid of AOLHell and go back to IE and find a new ISP. To completely remove AOLHell from you system you will need to do the following.

Do complete full reformat and a new clean install of the OS

Naz,

As Peter pointed out in the previous reply, AOL is the usually the main
culprit behind all computer havoc these days. The AOL Instant Messenger is a
common gateway for all malicious spyware, hackers, and viruses to come in
freely through any instant message you send someone. Of the dozen or so
computers I have repaired in the last month, AOL has been the root cause of
all their problems. The main problem was not only the AOL browser, but moreso
it was the Instant Messenger of AOL. At this point, even if you use Hijack,
CWSHredder, or even all your Anti-virus software utlities, you will not be
able to get your system back on track to run normally. Your first attempt
should be to remove any and all traces of AOL. Even go into the Progam Folder
manually and delete any related folders after you have performed the
uninstall of those applications.

After that, go to the Control Panel, select Accessibility Options, and check
the box for Internet Explorer and click ok. This will remove Internet
Explorer momentarily. Reboot your system, then go back to Control Panel,
select Accessibilty option again and check the Internet Explorer box again,
this will re-install all of it's components. You can then go to Microsoft
Windows homepage and turn on Automatic downloads for Service pack 2. DO NOT
install or download the Malicious SOftware Detector. This will cause serious
havoc on your computer with many applications. Especially those that are not
registered and legal, if you know what I mean. Hope this helps you.

What verison of AOL are you using if AOL 9 Security Edition Remove it and
go back to 8. Second make sure you do not have any proxy settings in IE
(tools-->internet options-->Connection-->Lan Settings-->make sure proxy
server is unchecked).
You may also want to try and reset you winsock controls. If you have
broadband you can use the AOL browser to download SP2 (234mb??) and then run
it. Hope this helps

OK now I have formatted my HD and re-installed WIN XP, and I still have the
same problem so its not AOL.
It must be related to my Router (conexant) and/or DNS TCP/IP setting and/or
open closed ports. I have tried AOL 7 and that works fine but still nothing
much with IE6.
The struggle continues.......

Waaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fixed it. It was the Router, took me about an hour to find an obscure
firmware upgrade for it but finally found it and successfully installed it
despite all the warnings.
Its a 4 port Epic Router, with Conexant Chipset.

Finally.....time for some sleep now :-) zzzzzzzzzz

Thanks for all your input.

Also realize that some routers allow you to block any access to internet if
you are not using AOL. Something to think about for the furture.
