Anything like DATE_RUN?

The neat program on SOSs site is long gone, as many here might know.
I've been doing searches for last hour and nothing similar comes up so
far that isn't freeware. Perhaps since messages in the archives
someone has seen something?

What would be nice is that the program be small and that it runs
programs we choose _once_ a day instead of on startup, just like
DATE_RUN sounds like it did.

Thanks! :oD

My favourite for this is Log Monitor

I wrote a review of it a while ago ...

Sounds really kewl. The description doesn't match the type of thing
Date_Run does, though. For example, I don't need another sheduler as
I have an excellent one in PUAC. This Log Monitor is neat, but it's
goal is not the same as Date_Run's and although it isn't a scheduler,
it doesn't sound like what I need.

Here's the blurb from SOSs site for Date_Run, which I realize I should
have included earlier. Sorry 'bout that:

"Date_Run works nearly like your startup folder, but just nearly. It
was developed to start a selected program automatically, but only ONCE
a day while you're starting your system. This is independent from how
often you restart your system this day. Date_run was developed to
solve a little problem. If you want to start a program automatically
while starting your system, you can create a link from this program to
your startup folder. If you are starting your system ten times on the
same day this program will be started ten times, too. This got on my
nerves, so I developed Date_Run. SYSTEM INFORMATION : Date_Run is an
absolutely system friendly programm. No entries in the Registry are
required. The needed program, its DLLs and its Ini-file are all stored
in the same folder. Author requests if you like it to register
(free)if enough register he will improve the program."

Sounds perfect for my needs without providing any extra services and
it's standalone, etc., tying into the startup folder which is perfect.
I have 2 programs, one of which is a birthday program, that I only
need to have run once a day on system startup no matter how many times
I boot up or re-boot.

PUAC already takes care of all my scheduling needs and it's perfect
for that but I don't want to have to add another item to it. If I had
Date_Run, it would take care of separate functions and would not rely
on how many times I start my computer up, which is what varies.

Anyway, maybe someone somewhere even has this program from before it
disappeared (?)

Sounds really neat. I'll definitely keep it in mind for potential
future use. Thanks! :oD

Hmmm. That's an idea. My alarm clock program, much modified, might
do that. I'll add your post to my to-do list.

Hi! Thanks.

Just to let you know, Date_Run doesn't sound like a scheduler or alarm
clock program. It's a means to modify what is in your startup folder.
Just as an fyi.

I use PUAC myself, recommended here many years ago to me. It's
excellent. It's a scheduler, an alarm clark, can launch programs
while at the same time play a wav and say a message! That last bit
still blows my mind and my uncle was very impressed when I installed
it on his computer and added voice instructions to the programs that I
had PUAC launch once a week for him to help him clean his system.
With the voice walking him through it, he caught on much more quickly
than he otherwise might have, I believe (my uncle is a real newbie yet
and Ad-aware and Ewido can be complicated to a newbie, but not nearly
as much with PUAC's ability to play text as voice! <g>).

Thanks and cheers! :oD

My apologies for the confusion. Just had a look on the WayBack machine and
found Dr_Setup.exe (v3.0 - 387K - dated: April 2003) .... is that it?

Hi!

This is so awesome. It'll be neat to try this program. Glad you knew
or had a location for it! <g>

I had difficulties in downloading. I tried 3 times, then rebooted my
system and tried a fourth time. I get this error each time I try to
use file:

"Error reading C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Dr_Setup.exe. Possible cause: bad
disk or file transfer error."

I tried using the setup and opening with my unzip program and error
there, too. Do you know what the problem could be?

Thanks! :oD

I'm afraid not. However, if it helps, I've extracted the contents of the
..exe and re-packaged them in a .zip for you :o)

What's wrong with Task Scheduler which is part of the Windows
operating system? It does exactly what the OP requested.

I am the original OP and I don't use that feature in Windows. I've
never liked it as it hardly ever does what I need it to do. It always
runs into some difficulty or another. And then you have to have it
running at all times for it to work. PUAC does a much better job and
it does more. It not only launches on schedule but it will play a wav
_and_ SAY a typed message of your choice. Those things have never
worked with Task Scheduler. And I could get around all that possible
with compiling an AutoIt script, but why? when PUAC does this straight
off the bat. <g>

Thanks just the same but I'll leave Task Scheduler for those that like
this program.

Cheers! :oD

Thanks! This does indeed work much better now. I did run into
another error message: "Can't load SETUENG.DLL or any other proper
Language Library for ASETUP". Wondering if it's just a question of
registering the DLL, perhaps? I'll try again tonight.

Thanks! :oD

More than likely, yes

Just as an fyi.

It doesn't touch the startup folder ....

I just looked at it. Date_Run runs itself every bootup from a
run=path.to.prog\date_run.exe line that it adds to the win.ini file. It
stores the program that you wish to run, and other info such as whether
it has already run that day, in an ini file in its own folder.

Its biggest drawback, as I see it, is that you can specify only ONE
program to launch once a day. Any attempt to 'add' a second program just
overwrites the first program.

Also, as this runs from win.ini, it *may* run your requested program
before the PC is fully thru its boot sequence.

Try powertools once a day
<http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptoad.asp>. Karen writes good
software.

Thanks for the info. Great to try new programs.

Any way to do that without the fanfare? A box seems to have to come
up reminding me that Karen's is at work. I'd just as soon have the
scheduled program run ... or not, without that fact being advertised.
Any ideas on how to remove Karen's box? Annoying at best.

Thanks! :oD

DEsc:
Alert yourself about important events with different alarms and replace
your Windows tray clock using different skins.
Alarm clock that will play a WAV file. It also can run a program, log
off, reboot, shut down, or power off.
Atomic Alarm Clock also an atomic-time synchronizer and advanced
replacement for Windows tray clock. See the time, seconds, day, date
and system UpTime in different skins. Displays the time for any of the
time zones. Over 100 skins are included in the distribution.

This alarm clock is built into your personal PC and is completely
customizable.

Sorry, not free, but nice :)

Learn VB. Download the source code (from the same page). Rewrite it
any way you like.

I have enough on my plate dealing with Excel and Access! <g>

I gave up and ended up putting two new reminders in PUAC for the
program in question. One has the option ticked off the run if alarm
time missed, the other not. It's probably better this way anyway. It
just sounded nice to be able to do the other as I could have then
shared this program with a friend's mom who didn't like it popping up
every time she turned on her pc. What the heck. No solution to the
problem with their computer, cut at least this way does the job for
me.

Thanks.
