Any way to zap that annoying VGA icon?

Summary: How do I get rid of that very annoying VGA icon at startup which
covers everything below, can't be moved, and seems to stay there "forever"?

Reference: 9/25/2007 2:34 AM PST posting by "Retired Bill" titled "VGA plug
connector icon displays every bootup"

"Cal Bear '66" said: "My monitor also displays the connection (DVI) when I
boot up, or wakeup the monitor, but it disappears very quickly and there is
also no option to turn it off. Perhaps there might be some option to shorten
the length of time it is on
screen, otherwise there is possibly nothing you can do about it and it does
not
interfere with performance in any way. Another idea is to see if the monitor
has a setting that only allows the VGA connection to be used so that it will
not
search connections for a signal. Vista itself has no options or controls for
this behavior. "

I'm not sure what he meant by "disappears very quickly" but mine stays up
there 45 seconds, possibly longer which seems like 5 minutes when you are
trying to see the things underneath it. Also, regarding "it does not
interfere with performance in any way", it does lengthen my startup time by a
minute since I can not do anything until I can see what's under this icon
which is very large (.75" x 2.5") and cannot be moved.

Did someone figure out how to use "some option to shorten the length of time
it is on the screen" or how "to see if the monitor has a setting that only
allows the VGA connection to be used so that it will not search connections
for a signal [whatever that means]"?

Also it seems like it comes up multiple times. "Dwarf" explained that was
because the screen resolution was being changed, somehow causing it to appear
again. He also said: "You may be able to turn it off through the menu
options on the monitor"

Did someone figure out how to do this?

I have a new 22" flatscreen Gateway monitor with a new Gateway desktop
computer and strangely I don't remember this appearing when I first got and
used my system. Perhaps I am noticing it more because I am using the Vista
"sleep" and "hibernate" options more when I leave the computer and this icon
appears when I restart again. It just seems to come up all the time and is
slowly driving me crazy!!!!

Did anyone find out how to get rid of it entirely, shorten its duration,
make it appear only once, not multiple times, move it, or in any other way
make it less annoying?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Advice to a newsgroup novice:
Try to keep your question in one message thread. Looks like you took
responses to an earlier message of yours and created a whole new topic out
of it.
Which means some people will be answering your old message and some will be
answering this one. Which means some responders won't see what others are
saying, so the whole dialogue is lost. Dialogue is the whole point of these

Hi DP:

Thanks for the "newbie advice", but I need more clarification on newsgroup
protocol and message thread etiquette.

"Looks like you took responses to an earlier message of yours". No, when I
had this question I searched to see if it had already been been asked and
answered. I found that 'Retired Bill' had asked a similar question on
9/25/2007 - hence my "Reference" to his posting, ie. Reference: 9/25/2007
2:34 AM PST posting by "Retired Bill" titled "VGA plug connector icon
displays every bootup".

People did give him a number of suggestions, but there was no posting of
what worked (if anything) for him. My question was not answered, ie. "Did
anyone find out how to get rid of it [the VGA icon] entirely, shorten its
duration, make it appear only once, not multiple times, move it, or in any
other way make it less annoying?" So I initially posted my question on his
thread as "replies" to two people who made the best suggestions, ie. "Cal
Bear '66" and "Dwarf".

However, it then occurred to me that maybe people didn't continue to read
old postings, so I posted my question as a new posting with the reference to
his posting.

So my questions to you regarding what I should have done are:

1. Are you saying that people should post a new question in the reply thread
of a closely related old question which someone else has posted rather than
as a new question posted on its own under their name?

2. Do people continue to read old postings to see if there are new
questions posted there? If so, how do they know when new questions are
posted there, ie. does this "chat room" software system highlight or sort new
replies as well as newly posted questions to bring them to people's attention?

[On a related note is that fact that there are 5 replies here, but none at
my "reply" postings under "Retired Bill's" thread which seems to confirm my
fear that people would not see and respond to my question there where I first
posted it.]

I am new here and want to do things properly, but I have noticed that people
do seem to post redundant questions that have already been answered. I most
noted this when I was looking for suggestions for the best security software
to get for Vista and my new Gateway desktop and laptop computers under the
"Security" discussion group. People seemed to keep asking the same questions
even though answers had already been posted.

I gave the reference to "Retired Bill's" question and the answers he got
from "Dwarf" and "Cal Bear '66" to show what I already knew from them and
that I had "done my homework" and looked for existing related postings.

Do others agree I should have posted to "Retired Bill's" thread rather than
starting my own thread? Thanks for the help in using this newsgroup

Peter,

Although interesting, this article seems confusing (and perhaps not quite
relevant) to my case also. I read the short article on cross-posting vs.
multi-posting, but that seems to apply to what group a new topic (thread?) is
posted to. For example if I created a new topic like "Any way to zap that
annoying VGA icon" (is that called a new "thread"?) and put the same posting
under the "Windows Vista General Discussion" group and then also under the
"Security" group that would be "multiposting". While if I posted it once but
connected it to both the "General Discussion" and "Security" groups (I don't
know how one does that), that would be "cross-posting".

I did neither of those things. My postings are just under the single group
"Windows Vista General Discussion". The relevant question is what topic
thread should I be posting to? Should I have posted a new, but related
question under someone else's old topic thread that closely relates to my
topic or question (my concerns in that case being: will people see it there?,
will they be as likely to respond to me there as to a new topic?, is that the
appropriate protocol people are using in this medium?, etc.?) or should I
post my own question as a new topic with its own thread?

A related question is how should I make a "reference" to what I think is a
relevant related topic, either my own posting or someone else's (that is
really what a hypertext "link" is on the internet if you think about it). If
I had a web site like "http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm" I could
put information there and link to it from mutiple places (as I said that is
what hypertext and the WWW are all about). Is there a mechanism in this
newsgroup software to do that?

An example of my prior topic postings (which so far number two under
"Security") was one on 12/7/2007 "Is Spybot adding, not removing spyware". I
got some very helpful responses to that, my first posting. I took some
actions as a result of those suggestions to solve my problem. However, those
actions seemed to result in a new problem. I was in a quandry as to whether
I should post the new problem to the old thread since it was [weakly] related
or post to a new topic thread since it was really a different problem.

On 12/6/2007 I chose to post a new topic "Did I put a hole in my Trend Micro
Security?". However, I felt the two topics should be linked. Lacking a
hypertext link capability (or is there one?) I did two things to link the
topics:

(1) I put in a "reference" notation in my new topic to my old topic, ie
"Reference: Posting by “Vista Novice†(me) on 11/7/2007 12:19 PM PST “Is
Spybot adding rather than removing spyware?â€

(2) I put a "reference" under my old topic to my new topic, by adding a
"reply" that said: "Please see my new post (12/6/2007 2:25 AM PST) 'Did I
put a hole in my Trend Micro security wall?'

Interestingly, I received no replies to the new topic, not even suggestions
for where it should have been posted ;-)

That adhoc reference method was the best I could think of. I definitely
don't want to reinvent the wheel here, but I hadn't really seen references
between topics in other Windows Vista Community postings I have looked at. I
did see one "expert" on security who just seemed to "cut and paste" his same
long response as a "reply" over and over again under multiple topics that
seemed to ask the same or similar "what's the best Vista security software?"
question. That seems pretty inefficient, there has to be a better way.

Again, I'm new and on the learning curve of using this medium, so please
forgive my ignorance. Thanks for your patience. By the way, Peter, the
"Multiposting vs. Crossposting" article was quit interesting and will be
useful to me in the future I'm sure. Thanks for helping educate me.

I do have the manual, which says "FPD2275W 22-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor".

It has its own control panel in the form of "EzTouch menu buttons" up the
side of the picture frame. It provides its own control functions, its own
"help" and beginner's "tour" and must have its own cpu and software. I think
it is pretty much its own little computer which can be used to display a
picture from other kinds of input beside the output from my Gateway desktop
computer tower. It even has its own USB ports, eg. that's where I have my
mouse plugged in (I think it acts like a "USB hub" which then has a connector
back to one of the tower's USB ports).

The "specifications" page in the monitor manual lists 25 types of things
from "Panel Size, to Pixel Pitch, to Dimensions, to Temperature, to
Altitude"! While I know complete information is good when answering a
question, I hesitate to give all 25 things.

The specifications for "Connections and inputs" say:
- Analog (VGA): 15-pin mini d-sub VGA
- Digital (DVI-D): 24-pin DVD-D (supports 480p, 720p, and 1080i)
Includes HDCP ()High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)
- Composite video
- S-Video
- Component Y Pb Pr (supports 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i)
- AC power input
- USB 2.0 B-type (input)
- USB 2.0 A-type (output x4)

The example specifications you gave seemed to include other things besides
the monitor, eg. the cpu, speakers, etc. It that important?

Maxtimi (and roy69)

The message from Roy69 "List yourmotherboard..."

and your reply: "I am using an Hp Pavilion a1730n..."

which have the Subject: "How to Install an extra hdd?"

somehow appear under my topic thread: "Subject: Any way to zap that annoying

Any idea how that happened? The only connection I can see is that roy69
also posted a reply to my topic. Did the newsgroup software just hiccup?

Ah... Sorry. My misunderstanding.

As for the rest of your questions/points below, I think you will find that
people technically access this newsgroup in a variety of ways. When I say
"technically" I mean the actual method they use to read posts. I use Windows
Mail. Before that, I read newsgroups with Outlook Express.
There are people here who will recommend a variety of newsreaders for
newsgroups.
Others access this newsgroup via a website.
The thing is, each technique for accessing newsgroup renders different
results in how the messages are viewed etc etc.

The other thing is you probably will find just as much variation in how and
why people read and respond to messages.
There are dedicated folks here who read EVERY message and attempt to offer
help WHENEVER they can. God bless them. The more you access this newsgroup,
the more you will see their names and appreciate the effort they put into
their answers.
I tend to be a more casual reader of this and other newsgroups. I try to
help when I can, but honestly, I am not a judicious follower of these groups
in terms of making sure that everything I post has not been responded to etc
etc.
You may also find people who pop in here, ask a question or offer a response
to a question and then never show up again.

Bottom line is I guess this newsgroup is like herding cats. We might be
able to get most of the cats to go in the same general direction and
actually make a little bit of progress in our journey, but it's a messy
disorganized process.

(And then of course, there are the folks who like to use this ng just to
provoke others, call each other names etc etc. That adds an inordinate
number of posts to this group and complicates everything.)

People did give him a number of suggestions, but there was no posting of
what worked (if anything) for him. My question was not answered, ie. "Did
anyone find out how to get rid of it [the VGA icon] entirely, shorten its

However, it then occurred to me that maybe people didn't continue to read

to

So my questions to you regarding what I should have done are:

1. Are you saying that people should post a new question in the reply

than
as a new question posted on its own under their name?

2. Do people continue to read old postings to see if there are new
questions posted there? If so, how do they know when new questions are

because the screen resolution was being changed, somehow causing it to
appear
again. He also said: "You may be able to turn it off through the menu
options on the monitor"

Did someone figure out how to do this?

I have a new 22" flatscreen Gateway monitor with a new Gateway desktop
computer and strangely I don't remember this appearing when I first got
and
used my system. Perhaps I am noticing it more because I am using the
Vista
"sleep" and "hibernate" options more when I leave the computer and this
icon
appears when I restart again. It just seems to come up all the time
and
is
slowly driving me crazy!!!!

Did anyone find out how to get rid of it entirely, shorten its
duration,
make it appear only once, not multiple times, move it, or in any other
way
make it less annoying?

Thanks for any help you can give.

As for the rest of your questions/points below, ....

Hi DP:
Thanks for taking the time to educate me and answer my questions about
proper posting to a newsgroup.

Others access this newsgroup via a website.
The thing is, each technique for accessing newsgroup renders different
results in how the messages are viewed etc etc.

I had only accessed the "Windows Vista Community: Discussion Group" through
the Microsoft website (accessed in Vista by clicking "Windows Help and
Support", then "Ask soneone else", then "Windows Communities"). I didn't
even know that this was a kind of newsgroup or that there were many methods
of access including email. Since then, prompted by your explanations I have
read a bit more about other kinds of access, and about subtle details to
handle all readers:
- like hitting a return (enter) every 60-70 characters since not all
readers do line wrap.
- putting a blank line between a quoted message and your reply since some
readers need this separator.
- making sure there is a "-- " before your signature which lets the reader
remove the signature lines.
- the pros and cons of "top posting"; Microsoft newsgroups and modern
email systems encourage this by starting you at the top for your reply (they
automatically put your signature there at the top), but traditionalists,
newsgroup experts, etc. argue against it. I noted that you didn't top post,
and this is my first attempt at the technique of: quote 1, reply1, quote2,
reply2 which some experts recommend. Per "roy69" reference to
www.blakjak.demon.co.uk I read:

"How to Post to the Net" by Dani K and Susan Edkins
"How to Flame on the Net" by Dani K and Susan Edkins
"The Twelve Commandments of Flaming" on Usenet by Dani K
"Multiposting vs Crossposting" by David Stevenson
"Using Outlook Express to post to Newsgroups" by Sid Ismail, South Africa
"How not to post to the Net!"
"Top Posting" by David Stevenson
"Upsidedown Posting" by Richard Christopher, Dorking, Surrey, UK
The other thing is you probably will find just as much variation in how and
why people read and respond to messages.
There are dedicated folks...
Bottom line is I guess this newsgroup is like herding cats.

I love this herding cats analogy, very descriptive (to anyone who knows cats).
(And then of course, there are the folks who like to use this ng just to
provoke others, call each other names etc etc.

Very funny.

Herding cats....LMAO.
That fits NG's to a T.
Lots of tails get "squirrelly" in here.
