Any suggestions appreciated

I am running XP Pro. Everything works great most of the time. However, about
20% of the time a weird problem happens. I will click on a desktop icon and
nothing happens. Well, the hour glass comes up but that’s it, nothing else
happens. I can click on several icons and the exact thing happens each time
(nothing). Control-alt-del will not work either. After letting the computer
idle for about 5 minutes – I will click on anything and then every single
icon that I clicked on earlier will all pop up at once. Any idea on what is
causing this odd problem and how to fix it? I have did a system restore and
ran 2 different antivirus programs looking for a virus. All help appreciated.

Hi Ross,

This sounds to be the behavior from a program running in the background.
Anything from an AV scanning your incoming/outgoing mail to having a
periodic scan of a related sort, updates, scheduled downloads, tasks and/or
sharing a download music folder.

Check the Task Manager, your Startup Tab via msconfig and/or run:
