Any security built into XP remote desktop?

The impression I have is that by default windows XP remote desktop sessions
are encrypted with 56 bit encryption.....

You can increase this to 128 bit by using gpedit.msc and drilling down to
"computer configuration", administrative templates, windows components,
terminal services, encryption and security and setting "set client
connection excryption level" to enabled , high
