I want to make slideshow DVD/CD but i would not only like to display
pictures but also zoom in (eg to faces) and also zoom and pan to get details
from my hi-res digital pictures - anything that will do this?

DVD slideshow GUI
http://www.videohelp.com/~tin2tin/

Produce and author DVD slideshows!
Animate images. Add music. Add avi's. Rescale image size.
Add background Add music. Add texts. Add borders.
Add textbox. Set exposition time. Set transition time.
Choose between 140 transitions. Export the slideshow to
many fileformats including a ready to burn DVD-image
and Avi. Code your own avisynth transitions or make your
own jpg transitions.

There aren't any elegant freeware solutions to this challenge, I'm afraid.
For as little as $30 you can get commercial solutions that will save you
lots of time that will be otherwise wasted working with indadequate freeware
solutions.

However, if it's free you want. . .

Slideshow Moviemaker.

If you use XP, you can also use MS' free Photo Story.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx

Both of these will output to AVI, so you'll still need a burning program.
Photo Story will also output to wmv if you want to restrict your viewing to
PC only.

MyAlbum (freeware) has some zoom and pan features. Perhaps it meets
your needs.

It does? I haven't tried it for a year or so, but it didn't then, and
I don't see anything about this on the web site. Current versions have
transitions, but zoom and pan as part of the slide show?

I just checked. It has "slide" - picture slides off the screen (left
or right) revealing the next slide.
Couldn't see a zoom transition. If it's there, it has an obscure name.
