OK. I'm throwing this question out to the masses. PUH-LEEEEZE do NOT
quote me anything remotely similar to the following:

This feature can be turned off in the Control Panel. In Windows XP
open the Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices (it's just Sounds &
Multimedia in Windows 2000) then Sounds and Audio Devices, then on the
Sounds tab, scroll down to the section for Windows Explorer. Click
the event called "Start Navigation," and change the setting to "none"
from the dropdown box. Click OK to apply the change, and from now on
you can navigate clicklessly through cyberspace.

ARRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!

LISTEN CAREFULLY: THIS DOES NOT WORK!!! Something has caused the
"clicking" noise (which is sometimes a "pop" [like a
finger-popping-in-the-mouth popping noise] and sometimes a "buzz"
[starts as one buzz, then two, then three]) to become ON all the time
--- as in UNABLE to be turned OFF!

Even though I do Windows Update every week and have the VERY LATEST
patches and update my anti-virus software DAILY, could this be a
possible clue? THIS: "JS.Exception.Exploit is a detection for an
exploit that allows Java applets to perform various actions on your
system. In many cases, JS.Exception.Exploit may perform simple actions
such as changing your IE settings."

In other words, I am thinking that someone DID THIS to me! I say that
because Norton detected JS.Exception.Exploit, told me it couldn't fix
it (as expected), and FROM THEN ON the noises were there. AND THE STANDARD ADVICE
DOES NOT WORK (to turn them off).

Now, can someone tell me how to REALLY remove the noises and stop
quoting the above? Please! Come up with something NEW. Thanks!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

If you think someone has "done"this to you then you migt
like to scan your drives with some spyware/adware removal
program - eg Lavasoft. You can then quarantine any files
that may be causing this. Hope this si a new idea!

.It sounds like there is a problem between the
motherboard reading the information properly off of the
hard drive or something. Usually this happens with older
versions of windows and computers. My best guess however
is that your sound card is not functioning properly with
the computer interface. It is more than just going into
settings, you are right. But going into settings is the
correct method to fix such problems. Take the computer to
the local fix-it-up-shop and have them tweek it or your
computer may continue to send error message sounds and
eventually even fry. Check your mother board manual for
such information as error message sounds as well. Later

Where is the sound coming from? Off the wall, possible internal speaker
needs to be disabled/muted?
Sometimes dirty or loose connections to/from speakers.

My Dell is less than 1 year old and contains the very latest (as of
this past Tuesday) patches to Windows XP. It's not experiencing ANY
other sound problems. In other words: WRONG!!!

This happens when you have an onboard graphics chip. It is referred to in
electrical terms as crosstalk. No real solution other than to get an audio
card and disable onboard audio in the BIOS.

if it were me, i would uninstall the new drivers, then
download spybot and adware6.0 run them both, but be
carefull. if that doesn't work, used system restore, oh
and BHO Demon.exe will tell you what helpers you have,
that maybe you don't need. try restore first.
