The l-o-o-n-g settings I used to get hibernation to work
on an ASUS laptop will be posted in about 7 hours from now.

Hope the settings manage to get hibernation to work for you.

Okay KewlToyZ, here are all the settings that got
Hibernation to work on my ASUS laptop. Good Luck.
*************************************************

Start->Control Panel->Power Options

Double-click Power Options icon.

Window opens, set "On battery" settings of:

Turn off the display: 20 minutes
Put the computer to sleep: 1 hour

Select "Plugged in" settings of:

Turn off the display: 4 hours
Put the computer to sleep: Never

Click once on "Change advanced power settings" text.

A window opens named "Power Options"
(the first window stays on screen)

In this "Power Options" window, there is one tab
only, named "Advanced settings"

If you see this text:

"Change settings that are currently unavailable"

....then click once on that text.

Click "Continue" on the UAC window that pops up.

The "Power Options/Advanced settings" window will now
let you set some of the options which were grayed out.

The first option is named "Additional settings", expand that
option if it is not already expanded.

You should see "Require a password on wakeup", expand it.

You should see "On battery:" and "Plugged in:"

Set them both to "No".

Note: From now on I will only mention options that
need changing. If I do not mention an option,
leave such options alone.

Okay, let's set some remaining options.

Hard disk-> Turn off hard disk after:

On battery: 20 minutes
Plugged in: 240 minutes

Sleep-> Sleep after:

On battery: 60 minutes
Plugged in: Never

Sleep-> Allow hybrid sleep:

On battery: On
Plugged in: On

Sleep-> Hibernate after:

On battery: 240 minutes
Plugged in: 240 minutes

Power buttons and lid-> Lid close action:

On battery: Sleep
Plugged in: Hibernate

Power buttons and lid-> Power button action:

On battery: Shut down
Plugged in: Shut down

Power buttons and lid-> Sleep button action
(this is broken when Hibernate is used,
it does not matter what you set them at,
it still remains broken, at least on
my computer)

On battery: Hibernate
Plugged in: Hibernate

Power buttons and lid-> Start menu power button

On battery: Hibernate
Plugged in: Hibernate

Power buttons and lid-> Sleep button action

On battery: 20 minutes
Plugged in: 240 minutes

Display-> Turn off display after

On battery: 20 minutes
Plugged in: 240 minutes

Display-> Adaptive display

On battery: Off
Plugged in: Off

Click Apply, bottom-right corner of window

Click Okay, bottom-center of window, window closes

Close any remaining windows by clicking X on
upper-right corner of window

Click Start to open Start menu

In search box at very bottom of Start menu type:

control userpasswords2

Press Enter key on keyboard

Dispel UAC window by clicking Continue,
the "User Accounts" window opens

Check-mark the box just to the left of the following text:

"Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"

Click to select your user name, in my case it was the line:

Mark Administrators

Now we will remove the check mark from a box we checked.

Clear the box just to the left of the following text:

"Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"

Click Apply in lower-right corner of window, another window
named "Automatically Log On" opens

Enter your login password, in my case it was abcd

Enter it again in the box directly below the first box

Click Okay, window closes

Click Okay in bottom-center of remaining User Accounts window,
that window closes also

Log out and restart your computer, just to be on the safe side

You are finished, congratulations. :)

Now to test what you did.

DO NOT CLICK ON ANYTHING THAT SAYS "SLEEP", SLEEP IS BROKEN
(at least on my computer)

From now on, Hibernate will take the place of Sleep

Open Notepad, type something, leave Notepad open on desktop

Open Start menu

Near bottom-right of Start menu, immediately to the left of
the padlock icon, is another icon that looks like a circle

Hold your mouse pointer over that circle icon, it should
display this text briefly:

"Saves your session and turns off the computer. When you
turn on the computer, Windows restores your session."

Click on that circle icon. (the circle is on a brown background)

In my case, I had to wait for 30 seconds until the power light
went off, on my computer

Now press the Power button of your computer, another 30 seconds
went by and everything was restored to the desktop, without me
needing to log in.

Notepad was open on my desktop, all the text intact.

Hope all this works on your computer,

Arrgh, screwed up, will re-post the corrected settings.

BTW, found out that 'Sleep' is only broken on my ASUS
laptop computer.

Sleep works okay when following the posted procedure,
on the Vista partition of my Mac Mini desktop computer,
so Sleep might work for you also.

Okay, in about ten minutes I will post the corrected
procedure for Hibernate, auto Login, and Sleep.

NOTE - Some of the settings in this plan will not be
listed if you are running a desktop computer -
kind of use your imagination when setting up
a desktop computer - - - these settings are for
a laptop computer.

Double-click Power Options icon.

Window opens with "Select a power plan" near the
top of the window, I selected "High performance"

Click on "Change plan settings" just below the
text: "High performance"

Window opens, set as below -

Turn off the display: 20 minutes
Put the computer to sleep: 1 hour

Do NOT click on "Save changes"

Click once on "Change advanced power settings" text.
