Any disadvantages to locating My Docs on 2nd HDD

I know how to move it (Although I am not sure about the "Assigning
Permissions" bit).

But is there any disadvantage to having the folder and all my data on a
different drive from the OS and Programs?

I had thought the speed of file opening might be slower, but is this
noticeable, and what other problems might be encountered.

Thanks in advance.

Do you make regular backups of your system drive? If so, then your
docs and data won't be included... you'll have to back them up
separately.

I'd definitely do it, unless your second drive is inferior / slower. No
disadvantage that I can think of. I love having data separated as far as
possible from apps/OS.

Relocating files to a second drive can be made easier using TweakUi:

My Documents is one of a number of system created Special Folders
including My Pictures and My Music. These can more easily be relocated
using Tweak Ui. Download TweakUI, one of the MS powertoys, from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

In TweakUi select My Computer, Special Folders. You can scroll down to
see the full list of Special Folders to the left of the Change
Location button.

You may also need to change Default File locations in the Microsoft
Office programmes you choose to move the My Documents folder. For Word
go to Tools, Options, File Locations, highlight Documents, click on
Modify and change file path. For Excel go to Tools, Options, General
and change default file path.

Hope this helps.

How is right-clicking on My Documents, and on the General Tab, selecting
"Move" HARDER than 1. Firing up the browser. 2. Downnloading tweakui. 3.
installing tweakui. 4. Running tweakui???????

TweakUI does more than just this. However, if all that's needed is moving My
Documents, I'd manually do it just as you described.

Thanks for your help guys.

Gordon: When I right click on My Docs there is no option to "Move" on the
general tab, similarly on the MS website there was some advice to change the
target folder path in the My Documents properties, but again I did not see
that option.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

I'm presuming you aren't on a domain with folder redirection set via group
policy.

Right-click on My Documents on your desktop
Go to Properties
Change the target path from c:\documents and setttings\yaddayadda\ to
d:\mydata
Click OK/whatever and say "yes" when prompted to move.

If you don't see the option to change the path, then this has been locked
down.

Funny, I had to go through Start Bar and Right click My Docs from there for
the option.

Any idea how to change the icon back to the original?

Thanks

Excellent stuff, thanks again for your help guys, v much appreciated

What a pain, too. Sounds like a bad idea.

To steal the thread (I've always wanted to do this!):

MY backup setup/strategy:

I have three internal hard drives and one external.

Internal:
1) System with all programs and data
2) Clone of System disk (new clone every Sunday morning)
3) 50 gigs of Old Time Radio files, Acronis image of System
updated nightly

External:
1) Backup images (2) of my notebook
2) Copies of MyDocs, MyPics, Downloads, and a couple other
directories from System disk for easy transfer to notebook
3) Backup of Old Time Radio files.
4) older Acronis image of System disk.

I keep the clone of the system disk up to date on about a dozen
directories using Second Copy which is scheduled to do those
updates anywhere from once per 2 hrs to once per 24 hrs.

Boot order:
CD or DVD
HD1 (System)
HD2 (System Clone)

I think I'm covered
