Any diagnostic tool

Hi,
Is there any program trouble-diagnostic software
that can help one to get old programs up running.
The OS compatibility tab seldom fixes any problem.
Error-logs doesn´t tell me what to do.
I´m apparently in a position now having no other choice
than format the system-disk, and reload XPproff with only
SP1, and a memmory module of only 256MB, and deny
any future updates. -This will allow my old program to
properly run. Alternately, having one more machine.
Tryed VPC 2007. Wont run fast enough.
The problem I have: the OS reports a memmory read-error
when unloading it.
Thank you for comming up with any advise.
