Any Advice?? - Intel D865PERL - 2 SATA drives - Cannot establish RAID 0

F

Freddy

Hi,
I have tried Configuring the RAID 0 volumes (Cntl-i) prior to
installing OS (WinXP Pro) about 4 times.
I F6 the Intel App Accel drivers during OS install.

Then, tried twice to Migrate to RAID 0 after establishing the system
as RAID-Ready.

Everything acknowledges success.
But, when I try to boot-up, it says:
Disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.

I have no problem if drives are separate and not in RAID config.

System:
P4 3.0 G 800Mhz FSB
2 Maxtor SATA-150 160 Gb drives
Intel BIOS latest p12 from site.
All drivers used are latest downloaded from Intel site.

Thanks (TIA) for any input

If you find any clues, please post something and let me know. I'm going
through the same thing with two WD Raptor hard drives. As soon as I RAID 0
my drives, XP refuses to boot. If I destroy the RAID array, everything
works fine?!

What color is your motherboard?

Intel says that green motherboards do not support RAID 0 and
that black mobo do.
See Intel page
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/rl_available.htm

There are links on that page to driver updates also.
Are your driver and BIOS updated.

From this page
http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/ig/assembly.htm#7
"Serial ATA Drive (Optional)

For the Intel® Desktop Boards supporting Serial ATA, one or
two (optional) SATA cables are included. The cable
(4-conductor) supports the Serial ATA protocol and connects
a single drive to the desktop board. Either end of the cable
can be connected to the SATA drive or the connector on the
board. Some Serial ATA drives may require a power adapter
cable. Contact the manufacturer of the SATA drive to
determine the best method for powering the SATA drive.

For correct SATA cable function:
1.. Attach a cable end to the connector (A) on the board.
2.. Attach the other cable end (B) to the drive.

Figure 5: Attaching the Serial ATA cable.

Intel does not support the use of IDE to serial-ATA
converters, however limited testing indicates that such
converters may work with the Serial ATA feature of Intel®
Desktop Boards. The IDE drive may need to be configured as a
SINGLE drive (usually by setting a jumper). The drive may
not be recognized by the system if it is set as Master,
Slave, or Cable Select (CS).

For additional information on Serial ATA, refer to
Information on Using Serial ATA Hard Drives."

There are several SATA RAID driver updates...

It's a dark brown or black color.

Thanks for all the information, I've read it. I purchased an Adaptec SATA
RAID PCI card and RAID 0 works perfectly with my HDDs, yet the Intel RAID on
the MoBo doesn't.

Glad to hear you solved your problem. There should have
been some procedure or order to install the RAID 0 array.
With the PCI card you should have more options as to number
and RAID versions.

You might want to continue to look at the on-board SATA
because the PCI card and on-board might be able to work
together.
