AntiVirXP08

B

Bobbi

My machine is infected with AntiVirXP08. McAfee Antivirus was unable to
remove it. I've read that this virus can make it impossible to install other
virus removal tools.

It appears that the virus also deleted all my system restore points.
However, I have some system state backups made using the MS Backup Utility
on an external hard drive. The MS Win XP guidebook describes it as making
"copies of your registry hives".

What are registry hives? Would it be reasonable to try to restore a recent
system state backup using the backup utility under these circumstances? What
other parts of the system might need to be restored separately?
(MSCONFIG/Startup, etc.). How is the system state backup different from
creating a restore point?

I appreciate all guidance and references to explanatory material.

Ron-

Thanks for the reference. It looks good, but oddly enough, my McAfee Site
Advisor tool says the following about this site: "Feedback from some users
indicated that this site engaged in one or more negative or undesired
activities."

Any comment? Have you personally reviewed all the instructions in this
document? Having just been burned, I'm certainly leery about this site?

Hi Bobbi

I think that the site is promoting software which is supposed to remove the
virus for you. I have seen claims like this before (it might have been a
different site--there are so many of them) and I had feedback that the
program did not perform as advertised. That's why I said not to download
any software. I have used the manual information from this site (or one
nearly like it) on other problems and they generally helped. You will note
if you read the entire thread that some additional steps were required but
ultimately people had success removing it. I think it is worth a shot since
you can do it for free. Good luck--some of this malware is a real bugger to
get rid of.

this one is hell, evertime i log into my account it would display the
AntiVirXP08 window stuff, change my desktop background so i couldn't change
it back, put a screen of death on and log me out. haha nice, after it logged
me out i pushed that windows key at the bottom of the key board and logged
back in. i ran a msconfig turn off all starts and services accept for the
ones mark microsoft, did all the
windows updates and tried to unistall and remove program AntiVirXP08. NOPE
wouldn't. running a regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-SOFTWARE-Microsoft-CurrentVersion-Uninstall i found it
made a key rhcvqhj0er2t which pointed to a folder in my Programs Files. So i
deleted them. it seems to have work.
