You need to delete the old AV.
In most cases the two will interfere with each other and since, assuming the
new one is a good one, essentially do the same thing you don't need the old
one. I assume you won't be updating the virus definitions for the old one
anyway rendering it useless.

What do the instructions say ? I use Symantec/Norton's A-V. It permitted
me to load this year's version over last year's ,thereby preserving my
settings and updates and saving me a lonnnnnggg update session for the new
one alone. I did have to do a little setting adjustment as the new one put
on a daily reminder even though I had already downloaded the day's updates.
oops should say:
That's a GOOD POINT.
I guess in my mind I'm thinking "different" AV but if it's the same
brand you should be able to install over the other one.

Should be but once in a while there will be an update to the engine (the
core of the program). Some of those require an uninstall of the old
version. But if required, it's usually mentioned in the upgrade notice or
the download directions.
No, don't simply "delete" the old antivirus application. Remove
it properly using the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet, or
the specific removal instructions provided by the product's
manufacturer, if they advise another method.
