Is there any free antivirus that won't insist installing antivirus guards

Grisoft AVG...you can turn modules on and off as desired.

I'm not sure what you mean by "guards," but AVG puts nothing in the
taskbar. AVG put one icon in my system tray, and that is all. From that
single icon I can access all the functions and options, get to the
control panel, and perform all the tasks that the program is designed
to do. I've noticed one more icon in the system tray during a virus
scan, but it disappears when the scan is complete.

AntiVir would do this. At least in Version 6. I haven't yet tried the new
"Version 7."
