Anti-virus installation fails

I have tried to download from Symantic and also to install
McAfee 2004 version 8.0 from CD. In both cases my Dell
desktop will not accept the anti-virus programs and offers
no error messages.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Do you have local admin permissions on this workstation? Can you install
anything? Have you checked your event logs?
