Anti-Virus: Avast sucks

So I decide to remove it. --no uninstall option!-- Not even
in the add/remove programs. (I'm using Win98SE)

I bet your problem is Win98, not Avast. Lots of modern programs have
problems with Win98. You'll probably have to find something that runs right
on Win98.

Avast runs fine on 98

i've had some strange incompatibilities with Windows 9x. Kaspersky ran
great on one Win 98 SE box, albeit very slowly (5 hours per scan). on
another 98 SE box, it worked so poorly i had to uninstall it to even use
IE. very strange.

most everything runs ok on Win 2000 / XP IME (i suspect this is the
primary development environment these days).

with AV, i hate to say it but you get what you pay for. to get a decent
F-prot or KAV scan engine, you'll usually have to pay. i am not
terribly impressed with AVG (based on numerous tests) but i haven't made
my mind up on Avast yet. as long as your practice safe hex, a free AV
could do well.

there's a few options besides AVG and Avast. F-prot for DOS and
BitDefender 7 might work. there's also the a-squared antitrojan.

My trials over the last couple of years point in the opposite direction.
I've had massive troubles with NAV, but none at all with AVG. It seems you
get more by paying less (or by paying nothing at all).

I read somewhere that Avast had known problems with 98 for just that reason.
That may have been a while back. It may be fixed now.

I hear that. If I were forced to run 100% Freeware, my commercial AV program
would be the last thing I gave up. There aren't any Freeware AV programs
close enough to the AV program I use just now.

I'm ticket off.
I downloaded Avast for home ( http://www.avast.com/ ) & installed it.

It asks me if I would like to have my email checked, but doesn't
specifically mention that it will be modifying the entries in my mail
client's configuration.

I the try to activate the program, and it won't accept the
registration code that the company just sent me.

So I decide to remove it. --no uninstall option!-- Not even

Goodbye Avast.

I've heard AVG is another free anti-virus. I'll try it,
but I sure hope it's better than Avast.

If it sucks too, then I guess I'll have to choose between one of
the Big Boys and pay some yearly fee to get updates... :(
Sounds like you downloaded an earlier version of Avast and got a code
for the newest version. The newest version of Avast no longer makes
changes to your email settings, where as the last version did. Try
downloading it directly from the website, incase you got it from a
mirror or other site before and use that code you got. It\t should work,

NOTE: I used the previous version where it changed my email setting and
I was thoroughly ticked off also. But I gave it a chance before removing
it and it was the best move I have made in a long time.

I used Avast for a long time and was happy with it until recently when
4.5 came out. Now they're trying to do too much with it, and it seems
to be going the way that ZoneAlarm did, just adding too much crap to the
program. I also just did a fresh install of Win2k the other day and
installed Avast and immediately started seeing errors in my Event Logs
with Avast 4.5. I uninstalled it and it hosed parts of my OS.

So I've removed Avast, reformatted, and went with AntiVir. It seems to
be good also. And I don't mind doing manual updates either, as long as
the AV program doesn't try to take over my computer like Avast did.
It's a shame that they're making Avast overly complicated now. It WAS a
great program.
