With Vista now looming over us, isn't it about time that MS teamed up with
reputable "anti- anything" companies to deliver a viable product to users?
The cost to MS would be "a drop in the Ocean", the individual companies
would benefit from regular trusted Income, and the end user would get a
product that they might be FINALLY SATISFIED WITH!

There already IS a viable alternative:

www.ubuntu.org

And get fine a couple of billion by the EU for including a tool that some competitor feels
discriminated against them?

That's funny Gordon. :-)
I'm wondering what your doing in this newgroup though.
Normally Linux people wouldn't be caught dead in here.
I could be wrong. Heckling can be quite fun. :-0

A. There always will be those who are never satisfied with anything Micros~1
does.
B. Any attempt to do integrate a product that impinges on the sale of a
competing product will result in lawsuits by the offended company. Witness
the evil RealPlayer business.
C. Micros~1, as a corporate policy, seldom 'teams up' with anyone. If the
target product is any good, Micros~1 simply buys the company.

Best bet is to chose to NOT install viruses and spyware in the first
place.

I support Windows as well (unfortunately....)

I hear you. I've actually been a netware guy for the last 6 years. I've
been quite impressed with Netware servers. They put the Energizer Bunny to
shame. I'm looking into migrating to Novell's OES with the Linux kernal
but from my testing it's just not ready for primetime yet. I'm also going
to check out Novell Linux Desktop. I just haven't gotten the time yet.

Linux is looking good. I think the server side is already there and the
desktop side is coming along quite nicely. It's very usable now, even for
novices. The problem for novices is the initial setups and then changes.
Configuration is still geek minded enough to make Advil's stock prices rise
sometimes.

IMHO the current offering of Ubuntu (or Kubuntu if you want a slightly
more XP-flavoured look) is very desktop-ready. 25 minute install, found
all my hardware on my Acer F1, including my external Firewire HDD, and
that 25 minutes includes Open Office 2, Firefox and Evolution, a Linux
Outlook look-alike. (Personally I don't like it and use Thunderbird with
the calendar extension). And, with the Ubuntu distros, you cannot run as
root, unless you jump through some pretty obscure hoops! All in all, a
very easy and SAFE distro for the newbie. The learning curve is no more
than going from (say) Windows 98 to Windows XP.......

That goes along with the other good things I've heard of that distro. I
just haven't had any time to check it out. That's a good showing for
install times with that software and finding the external HD.

Thanks for the tip.
