Thanks - I really don't need a grammar lesson, as I made
this mistake based on the fact that I had a 1 year old
baby crawling up my lap, and I had no time to re-read my
post. No excuse, I just made a careless mistake. You seem
to have some issues with grammar - I'm not sure why since
you used the word "prolly" and I don't even want to get
into a discussion about that! The only reason I mentioned
that I am an English teacher is due to the fact that I
have extensive reading and writing experience, and I've
had trouble making sense of Microsoft's website as it
contains inconsistencies, which means that most common
users who visit the site are going to be just as
overwhelmed, if not more so than I.

If I had criticized other replies for grammar (which
wouldn't be my place to do since this is a Windows XP
forum), I could see why you would feel it necessary to
criticize mine. Message boards demand quick responses for
the most part, and sometimes this means that one might
make a grammatical error or two - even us English teachers.

Sigh****
Now we are going to have to wade through discussions on "us" vs "we" I bet.

Intentional plant.

Mebbe Tiger should get a jon writing for Microsoft. They offer excellent
daycare benefits.

Thanks for the reply re: prolly. I wasn't aware of that.
I'm not sure what the point is behind PABear's posts - I'm
assuming that he/she is joking.

Hi Jone,

It has been a long time since I've had an English class, but as best I
recall, the statement, "grammatical error or two - even us English
teachers." would be correct. The question of the use of , us vs. we, is
solved by ignoring the adjective, English.

Jesh! How do these arguments ever take place in an XP newsgroup??

JAX

Hi Tiger,

That was my first experience with "prolly". If I've ever seen it before, I
guess I just read over it as a miss-spelling. One of the shortcut words that
I do recognize, and don't care very much for is, "progy", meaning program.
I've been around the internet and newsgroups for quite awhile and am still
trying to get used to some of those shortcut words and symbols. By doing a
bit of research, I was able to find that prolly was a synonym for probably,
but there was no given etymology for the "word". That left me to think it
may be a British slang word.

Jesh! So what if a word is miss-spelled or the independent clause "ain't"
correct. I don't even care if someone's participle does dangle!!

FWIW, JAX

My pet peeve is prolly when folks refer to anti-virus proggies as
pharking anti-virii apps [grin]

Tiger,

Wait on the xp sp2 release. Then try to install xp sp2.
If it installs you version is mostly likely legal. If it does not,
It may be a pirated version.

However, After reading through this thread. I say the system builder
did his job.

Hey Plato,

Doing a letter count, the same thing can be said in English in a way that
most English speaking people would understand. This is kind'a like trying to
do Mexican Spanish when you already speak Spanish. I came to the desert SW
USA after I already spoke Spanish. I think the transition here may be easier
than learning a new English.

Cheers, JAX

I'd like to be in the SW usa desert a week after a huge rainstorm.
Perhaps I'll take my show on the road and pop in on Ken Blake.

If Phoenix is near your destination, let me know. I'll put you up for a few
days.

I've actually been seriously thinking about this. I'd pull my own
trailer tho or pitch a teepee. I'd only require electric and a phone
line. Meeting folks you talk to online is a very nerve racking
experience, but loads of fun. They never "appear" to be like you
pictured them.

A place to camp, with electricity, is no problem. A private phone line is a
different story though. I have never checked, but something like KOA may
offer that or some kind of on-line service.

Congratulations Tiger,

This has got to be a contender for the longest thread I've ever seen.

Boredom, mainly, and who's arguing? I thought we were having a very OT
conversation about prepositional clauses (and no one has yet posted Winston
Churchill's/Mark Twain's infamous remark!

Didn't really follow the entire threads, but I am pretty sure my
information
is correct.

Your info is correct, the MS OEM site states so.
Carey responds to an enormous volume of posts and I doubt he could do so
without the occasional mistake and he does have the right to express his
opinion. I believe the ratio of Carey's help vs. harm is way on the side
of
help. He certainly has a more positive effect in the newsgroups than the
crude critics wanting to ban him for expressing his right to his opinion.
Some of these critics also complain when their opinions are also unfairly
judged.

I disagree completely, he does help, but by none of his own thinking; he is
more a "help by giving links" master,

Exactually what is wrong with giving links to the information that solves a
posters problem that makes you completely disagree? Do you and did you on
your own find all the soliutions to all problems you have ever given help to
a poster? Does someone have to find the solution to a problem on their own
before they can post a reply to a problem? By your thinking, if a person
does not find a solution on their own, they should not share information
with someone if they did not originate the information?
Well , I completely disagree with you.

than by his own worded explanation to problem solving. he isn't harmful, I
agree, but he never admit fault of his own, or that of MS (sycophantic so to
speak). is opinion are not thought out from making comparison to other
products, because he refuses to use anything else, and rip others as "using
inferior product" if they are that from MS. He rips anything Linux, though
he has no knowledge, or any idea how it works!

In any case, he posted without thinking in this thread, and gave wrong info,
as if what the OEM builder did was piracy. he didn't read, nor respond to
those that challenged him to that effect, and he hasn't responded. Carey
should read more about OEM at the MS sites before making blanket, accusatory
reactive posts being that of piracy. He also tell others to make purchases
that are unnecessary, or to expensive, instead of other means; i.e. one
needs to, purchase the Full Version, when they clearly could use an upgrade.
Sometimes I think he either has big investments there, or he is looking out
more for MS and their profits, than that of helping the consumer.

Jupiter from the posts I did read did not back up a "legal" or otherwise
opinion.

Jupiter, just plain didn't understand what I said, and then went on to say
that "context" is the way to think, when Carey expressed no such context. He
cannot be defended either in this case.
I will stand by my understanding that a non-hologram OEM{system builder}
CD
can be perfectly in compliance with all of Microsoft's requirements, and
can
be used as qualifying media for a XP upgrade.

I will with you also, as you are right, but London to a brick, Carey will
not admit it, and he won't have you tell him otherwise! It would be tooooo
sacrilegious for him to venture into being wrong, or unsupportive of MS.

"A discussion in which disagreement is expressed; a debate. "

That was the first definition of "argument", copied from dictionary.com. I
should think it would apply. An argument doesn't have to be heated, to be
one.

Not even close. 45 messages in the thread so far, according to
Google Groups. For those who remember the old "Mouse Crud" thread
in alt.windows95, Google Groups says it went on for 89 messages.
