Answer Yes or No?

I'm moving some old files into my _private folder (for the first time) so
their not picked up by search engines. After I've moved the files into the
_private folder and try to publish, I get the message that says: "Do you want
to remove this file? The file exists on the destination server but does not
exist on the current web site. Do you want FP to remove it from
www.mysite.com?" Should I say yes or no? I don't want to permanently delete
anything and I don't quite know what it's asking.

If in doubt - say no.

If you have moved files from one folder to another on your computer - it may
be just asking you if you no longer want these files in the 'old' location on
the server, so it can delete them to match your computer.

But if in doubt - play it safe - say no!

Yep, when you move files, this will always occur.

As Steve says, it is just making sure that your two webs are aligned.

Your files will be copied from the new location on your disk to the same
location on the web.

Let's see

Say, you have moved files 'file1' 'file2' 'file3'
from "folderx" to "_private" on your hard disk.

When you publish, you will have
Local Disk Web
folderx - file1
- file2
- file3

_private file1
file2
file3

You will be prompted "Do you want to remove 'file1' 'file2' 'file3' from the
folderx on the web site" (or similar words)
It is safe to say "Yes" because the files are you local disk in "_private".
FP will then publish the same files to "_private" on the web
In this case, the situation after publication will be
Local Disk Web
folderx - -

_private file1 file1
file2 file2
file3 file3

If you say "No", then the prompt will come back next time, because they will
still be on folderx on your web site.
In this case, the situation after publication will be
Local Disk Web
folderx - file1
file2
file3

_private file1 file1
file2 file2
file3 file3

You moved the files into a private folder. That means the files no longer
exist in the original location in your local web, but they do exist in the
original location on your remote server. It's asking if you want to remove
those. You want to say *yes*, because you don't want the search engines to
see them and they are now in the private folder.

Google, MSN, Yahoo, etc. only from the FP search component.

You have to answer YES.

I haven't tested this over the years, because back with the FP98 extensions and maybe with the first
version of the FP2000 extensions, as long as you have the URL to a file in the _private folder you
could still access the file, the permissions at the time were set to allow forms and the hit counter
to be able to write to files in the _private folder but did not stop them from being viewed.

But now that the _private folder is protected that means you can't have links to any pages or
include page within it, since a site visitor would be prompted for a login, correct?

Tom: I have used the _private folders for all my include pages beginning
with the 98 extensions and now the 2000 extensions and have no problems
whatsoever.

Of course, linking to pages within the _private folders gives a forbidden
access.
