Yes, I know...it was a typo error for which I immediately sent
an errata correction. But, thanks anyway. It pays to proofread
so as to avoid dumb errors like dat one. To err is human...to
admit it is not.

/scannow...
...is that right? My prompt opens to C:\documentsandsettings\my name.

You can run it from the Start Menu Run box or from the Command Prompt.

Ok thanks John. One other thing , if you will notice here:>
:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
BootDir
CDInstall
DriverCachePath
Installation Sources
LogLevel
PrivateHash
ServicePackCachePath
ServicePackSourcePath

there is no SourcePath string. Anyways i went and added it and gave it a
value of C:\ which is the location of my i386 folder- just where it's
supposed to be. Do you think that is OK?

Make sure that it is a REG_SZ value. The SourcePath has to point to the
parent folder, the folder containing the i386 folder, and not the i386
folder itself. You said earlier that the i386 folder was at:
C:\Windows\i386 so the SourcePath would be C:\Windows

LOL. Not really, it's just Elementary School English (or rather, should

I ran sfc /scannow and my dllcache is back. Thanks again.

Hey: would you look in this key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
and paste your SFCdllcache or confirm mine- type mine is reg_expand_sz and
path.
My path is D:\from windows\system32\dllcache(because i have moved it.
This key should show the full path? Unlike the SourcePath key. Is this
correct.

Yes, should have been, could have been, might have been, but
wasn't...big frickin' deal...the double negative was a mistake.

Perhaps you have learned a valuable lesson from these
manipulations of Windows XP components. I would hope so.

If you are suggesting I shouldn't be moving these folders around all
"willynilly"
you're right . Of course if one is not willing to fail one cannot succeed,
or something like that.
Sfc.exe did in fact rebuild my cache. I've always tried to be careful. I
can't explain what went wrong with the cd.

I don't have that value on my machine because I have never moved the
folder but it is a REG_EXPAND_SZ value and the fully qualified path
should be entered, example: %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache . The value
is only present if the cache is moved. If you have XP Pro you can use a
Group Policy to move the folder and the SFCDllCacheDir will then be
copied from the Windows File Protection Policies Key to the Winlogon key.

Sorry, but double negative scream out at me. I used to write test
questions/answers, and we love double negatives in our questions or
answers. People almost always choose the incorrect answer in
questions like that because most folks don't pay attention to the
double negatives

Do you see anything in the name of this help group that says Grammar?
No? Then why bother us with your platitudes here? Go elsewhere with
your grammatical pet peeves!

When the written word is the only means available to judge a
person, the proper use of language becomes more important
than usual. Poor use of the written language is like wearing
dirty clothes in public. The language in the paragraph above
also says something about your general attitude.

Let's all get critical, okay? You said, "...but double negative scream
out at me." Should have been "negatives". And you forgot the period at
the end of the last sentence. Everyone messes up now and then. If you
think you're perfect, this usually happens...

LOL! I'm in the mood for alliteration. Pompous, pedantic pissant. That
pretty well describes you in this context.

I could come up with more interesting things to say about you and your
attitude, but I got (sic) better things to do. (And I've been asked to leave
people's heads in place whenever humanly possible, no matter how richly they
deserve beheading.)

You got technical advice to offer, go for it. Otherwise S T F U.

Obviously you are new around here. If you stick around long enough you
will get to know "Navigator" (or his next incarnation) and what he's all
about... then you can tell me more about attitude.
