Another Q--Maybe I've already got USB 2.0???

My computer was put together by a local shop in a city I used to live
in, about 4 years ago. The fellow told me I had USB 2.0 ports, but
that MS hadn't released the drivers yet.

I'm buying some USB 2.0 peripherals now, and must have the USB 2.0
ports. I checked my configuration a few months ago, and it did not
say "enhanced." So I thought I had only USB 1.1 ports.

The motherboard is ASUS. The FACE of the CD says "P4B533 series
motherbord) and is dated Nov. 2001. at the bottom of the FACE of the
CD, it says, "Note: The Microsoft USB 2.0 driver has not been
officially release as of the support CD production date. Please
download the USB 2.0 driver from the Microsoft website to upgrade your
USB 1.1 ports to USB 2.0".

The user guide for ASUS "P4BGL-VM" has several references to USB 2.0.
It talks about BIOS settings, USB 2.0 headers, switches, USB legacy
modes, USB 2.0 Reference Voltage, USB 1.1 controllers, USB 2.0
controllers.

All these references make me think that i DO have USB 2.0 on the
motherboard already, and don't need to buy a new card. But I need
some help deciphering the user guide, setting switches if necessary,
and changing the BIOS, if necessary.

Would some kind soul help me?

You seem SURE that my mobo already has USB 2.0. A few months ago, I
posted queries in these newsgroups and was told I didn't have USB 2.0
and would have to buy a card. That was after someone told me to check
for "enhanced" in a bios or diagnostic or something. Sorry, but I'm
confused.

What does SP2 have to do with it?

I heard that the drivers are part of SP1, and I still have the disk
for that one (I think).

Thanks.

I HAVE the manual for my motherboard. Someone on this list told me to
look in device manager for "enhanced," which would indicate USB 2.0.
Another told me to look for the EHCI entry and update the driver to
bring the ports up to USB 2.0 standard.

The motherboard says I have 2.0 ports but need to get the drivers.
That was published in Nov. 2001, but the mobo was installed on Aug.
2001.

Later, I applied SP1 to XP Home. The USB 2.0 drivers are included in
SP1. Somebody on this list told methat I do not have USB 2.0 ports
because they weren't available in 2001 and that I need to buy a USB
2.0 card.

As you see, I've been getting conflicting information. I need to
figure out
1. Do I have USB 2.0 ports? (yes, because the ASUS user's
manual says so).
2. Do I have USB 2.0 drivers installed?
3. How do I find out if I have USB 2.0 driver's installed?
4. If they aren't installed, how do I install them?

Asus claims that your board has USB 2 controllers.

SP2 has the USB 2 drivers built-in. I don't recall whether SP1 does, but the
original version of XP pre-dated USB 2.

Utilities like SiSoft SANDRA:

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1391#download

can also tell you whether your USB ports support USB 2.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

And this is exactly where the BIOS stuff can come into the way.
Some old BIOSes have an option to disable 2.0 and operate the USB in 1.1 mode.

Download the manual from here
http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/sock478/p4b533/e1148_p4b533.zip

The information you need on adjusting your bios options starts on page 67.
For USB 2.0 and to make sure it is enabled, see page 95.

Once you have done this, and installed SP2 for Windows XP, make sure you
plug your USB 2.0 device into the USB 2.0 ports (item 25 and 27 as diagramed
on page 21).

If you need to update your bios (I'd go straight to version 1015 beta 3 if I
were you), the instructions to update your bios are in the manual just after
page 67.

Hi Jason,

I downloaded the manual. It says it's for ASUS P4B533. The
manual I have that came with the mobo says ASUS P4BGL-VM. The page
number you give seem to refer to the adobe page numbers; the actual
page numbers in the manual itself are different. The page numbers for
the downloaded manual and the manual I have are a little bit
different.

Question: Is the manual I downloaded the correct one? Or should
I use the manual I already have?

I appreciate your assistance.

I said I had a P4BGL-VM.

Is there a way for me to plug something into each of the USB ports and
test them for speed and functionality?

The book you sent me specified 4 USB ports, all on the rear of the
case. I have those ports. I also have two more ports on the right
side of the case. I can't see anywhere on the motherboard diagrams
that thoses ports are shown, and they're not mentioned in the manual
you had me download.

So I've got 6 ports.

I appreciate your assistance.

Sorry about the wrong link Take a look through your hard copy manual. It
should be similar in that it'll tell you which ports are USB 2.0 (if all of
them aren't), and it'll tell you where the USB 2.0 settings are.

Make sure USB 2.0 is enabled in your bios, and make sure you have Service
Pack 2 installed. That should do the trick.

Hi Jason,
Well, that's where I need some hand holding. I don't know how to
get to BIOS and what to do when I get there.
1. If I "enable" all USB ports to be 2.0, will my legacy 1.1
devices still work?
2. What happens if I get to BIOS and hit the wrong key? Is
there a way to back up the BIOS first so that I don't shoot myself?

Hi Jason,
I had already read the manual.. There's a lot of techno-babble
in there that is befuddling my poor limited intelligence.

Back to my previous questions:

1. If I "enable" all USB ports to be 2.0, will my legacy 1.1
devices still work?
2. What happens if I get to BIOS and hit the wrong key? Is
there a way to back up the BIOS first so that I don't shoot myself?

OK Guys,. I got into the Bios.

============================================================
BIOS & MY CHANGS:
One selection was whether to allow Legacy USB 1.1 to be enabled.
I left it enabled.
Another selection was whether to allow Enhanced USB. I changed
it to ENHANCED.
Another selection was for USB 1.1 -- its options were None, 1, 2,
or 3 controllers. It was set at three and I left it there.

I rebooted. All USB devices are working.

============================================================
I checked Device Manager. It says:

UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
Generic USB Hub
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
============================================================

Here are my QUESTIONS:
1. Why do I have TWO "USB Root Hub? ________
2. How many of my USB ports are set to USB 2.0?
3. What do 24CD, 24C2, 24C4 and 24C7 mean?
4. I have SIX USB ports on the ATX case. Four are in the back
-- same as in the mobo manual and the manual you had me download. the
other TWO are on the right-side of the computere case. WHICH ports
are showing up in Device Manager?
5. Is there a way to plug in a USB "tester" into each port and
check the speed, and find out that way if they are set to USB 1.1 or
to USB 2.0?
7. If I DISABLE Legacy Support for USB 1.1, will my old USB
devices still work?
8. Should I set the USB 1.1 settings to NONE?

============================================================
AFTERTHOUGHTS:
9. Do I still have to install a separate USB 2.0 card, as
earlier recommended?
10. Do I still have to install XP Home SP 2 in order to get USB
2.0 drivers, as earlier suggested?

Thanks so much for your patience. It's frustrating for me, but
bit by bit I learn a little more, and get my computer to do what I
need.
