I have a P4 2.66gHz 512mb Ram in an Intel D845PESVL Main
Board. I run XP Home with SP1a installed. About a week ago the drive
light stays on all the time although it doesn't seem to be accessing
the drive all the time.

It's buggin the heck out of me and I would like to fix the
problem. I searched the KB and found nothing. I searched the
newgroups and found several posts about the same problem, but no
answers. When I boot from floppy with Win98, the drive light behaves
normally, so it's definately an XP problem.

Any Ideas beside disconnecting the led or covering it up with tape?

Thanks
Clifton

Could be a jumper related issue. Try switching it from Master or Slave to
Cable Select (or vice versa).
XP and 98 handle HD recognition somewhat differently.

Western Digital drive(s)?
No, Maxtor 120GB
The computer has been running perfectly until this started a short
time ago, so I not sure why the configuration makes any difference.

WD drives have *always* given me weird issues with the HDD light (which
is actually an IDE channel activity light). This has been the case with
two separate mainboards, and several different WD drive models.
Usually, though, the HDD light only stays on when I am *not* in Windoze.
It was just a thought.
