HD activity light stays on - part 2

John Blair

I just to a new computer last Xmas. It's an eMachine
2.4GHZ Pentium processor.

I don't remember it doing this until reciently, but
after it boots, the drive activity light goes out.
But as I start using various applications, all of
a sudden the activity light comes on and stays on.

I've tried to find the application that might be
causing it, but when it happens, and I reboot and
then launch the app. it doesn't do it.

------

I tried as "Rick \"Nutcase\" Rogers" <[email protected]>
suggested and disabled the indexing service on the
properties of the drive in Windows Explorer.

This morning when I booted up, the light went out.
Then I opened my mail program (Eudora 3.0 light)
Then I opened Windows Explorer. Everything was
fine until I clicked on the folder option. The
HD activity light came on and stayed on.

I use an icon on my desk top to access Windows
Explorer.

Any other suggestions?

TIA

John

You didn't say if you have antivirus and a firewall running. If not, I would
first suspect that your computer has been compromised, and that it is being
used by others to store/disseminate files etc.

open your task manager and look at processes to see which one is using most
resources.
that might help point you to the app causing it.

Yes, I am running Norton Antivirus and it's up todate.

I'm set up with a wireless network in the house to a
cable modem. I have (currently turned off, but I'll
turn it back on and see what it says) ZoneAlarm firewall.

The problem seems to definately be associated with Windows
Explorer. This morning I launched several apps. and the
activity light was normal. But as soon as I launched
Windows Explorer, the light came on stayed on.

As to the process running, the Idle process is getting
about 98% and Explorer getting about 2% all the time.
