how do i set up a folder to be shared such that any one on
my LAN can see it but not have to enter a username and
password for the same? also i want them to have the the
permissions that i set when i share the folder

This answer is for XP Pro, and not using simple file sharing

Right click the folder select properties.
On the Sharing tab select Share this folder
Click the Permissions button, give Everyone Full Control.

Now if you are using Fat32 as the filesystem that is all you need do.

If using NTFS you need to go to the Security tab
Add the Everyone group and assign it the permission you want
Probably Read & Execute, which add Read and List Folder Contents
Write lets them add new documents, Modify lets them change stuff.
Full control lets them be able to assign permissions to the folder, you
probably don't want that

Thanks.

I just assumed that Everyone was added by default for any
shared folder if I assigned Everyone any permissions
whatsoever.

its working now.
