Thanks Gary. I do not get an error message so will try your suggestions re
McAfee etc. This is the first time I've looked for help in a discussion group
and I'm most impressed and very grateful.
I have to say that in a matter of just 2/3 hours we've come a long way from
Peter's initial problem, but I hope that is now resolved also.
Thanks All

Something has corrupted your password store. That something is
likely to be your antivirus. Windows Mail is not compatible with
most McAfee and Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

If after doing the above, the problem is not resolved, delete the
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

As I indicated in my original response, disabling is not sufficient.

Let me get this straight: when I update Windows Mail and McAfee programs that
came loaded on my computer (and were presumably compatible) because I get an
email notice that updates are available, they are no longer compatible?

That is an absolute crock.

I've had more problems with Vista and the Windows suite that I just
purchased than I did the previous eight years.

This can be due to changes in your mail provider's requirements, but since
there is no indication as to who that is, it's difficult to say for sure.

Contact your ISP, or your mail provider, to see if they have changed email
settings, such as requiring authentication using the full username and
password

HTH

I am getting this same problem with the popup of entering username and
password everytime I try to do anything in ms mail. I also can't send
messages..... Does any one have a clue why this just suddenly appears out of
no where and what the heck do we do to fix...???

If you are sure you are you are entering the correct username and
password, one possible cause for that error is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
