annoying searchbar stuck in taskbar

C

caramelhoney

I've ran spybot and it won't get rid of this. It's a
searchbar that is stuck in my taskbar. When I right click
in the search box, it gives me the option to choose which
search engine such as blazefind, google, yahoo, msn. And
I also noticed that in my internet explorer, next the
menu "Help", there is a new menu called "Main Links" with
three options for music, health, and auto. This has to be
some sort of spyware but I can't get rid of it. HELP!
It's annoying me everytime I see it in my taskbar.

Just posted this a minute ago. So I'll simply copy and paste the reply to
you as well caramelhoney. Here it is:

It has been recommended many times by many knowledgeable persons to use this
tool by S.Ramesh -MVP called Toolbar Cop. I ordinarily don't recommend
anything I've not tried or used, but this comes from a reputable source, and
has been recommended by people I know at the newsgroups. I've never heard
any negative reports about it. Again, I've never had need to use it, but it
seems like it might be the ticket for those with your particular problem.

Thanks, LuckyStrike.

Caramelhoney:

If the Taskbar "Search Assitant" item is not removed, try the following:

Applies to Windows 2000/XP systems:

Type the command in RUN box.
Regsvr32 /u C:\Windows\System32\omniband.dll

Then, rename C:\Windows\System32\omniband.dll to old omniband.dll and restart Windows.

If the bar is not removed, run this program and post the log:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Deskbands.exe

Additionally, download all the spyware cleaners and run them.

Sidebar here: I'm dealing with a poster who probably has a corrupt History
folder and is running XP. I know nothing of XP (nothing to speak of). We'd
like to do a Deltree on that folder, but all I have hands on experience and
certainty with is W98se. What do you know of the location of the History
folder in XP, and the path that should be used to re-create a new one?

If you can help with this I'd be grateful.(and so would heelsrule no doubt)

If only posters would state *which* OS and other stuff right from the
get-go. But nooooo... ;-D

Henri and Ramesh, (sounds like a restaurant. <g>)

Thanks for the input.

Ramesh - I provided that Mike Burgess link to the OP from the get-go, but
apparently they couldn't follow it. I also supplied Sandi Hardmeiers Deltree
instructions which oddly enough they did try to follow, despite my
suggestion they should refer to Mikes delcache instructions for XP.

Henri - Thanks; I'll submit this to the OP, who I presume will use these
instructions you offered in conjunction with the
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm instructions. Specifically the:
<paste>
To delete the History folder and index.dat (XP)

Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder and reboot.
(or log on as another user that has Administrator privileges)
Example: "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"
<paste/>

Thanks to you both.
