Annoyance with Opening Folders

J

Jeremy

Hello. I downloaded this piece of freeware called
DirGraph which is this cool little bargraph util that
shows you how much space on your hard drive each folder
takes up. I was reading the manual at
http://www.spillett.net/dirgraph/ when I came across
these instructions:

You can add DirGraph to the context [right-click] menu as
shown here. To do this, follow the following procedure:

1. From any explorer window, select the 'Folder Options'
command from the 'View' mnu [[actually it's in
the "Tools" menu]]
2. Select the 'File Types' tab, and find the item 'file
folder' in the file-types list.
3. Select 'file folder' and click the 'edit' command
[[actually, you click the "Advanced" command]].
4. In the resulting dialogue box, click 'New'.
5. In the 'action' box, enter a name for the new item on
the menu [i.e 'DirGraph', or 'Space Consumption
Analysis'].
6. Click the 'OK' and 'Close' buttons until you are back
to Explorer.
7. Now right-click on a folder in Explorer, and your new
option will appear.

So I thought "cool! I'm gonna try this and while I'm at
it maybe I can figure out how to delete some useless
context menu commands like "Enqueue in Winamp" and "Add
to Winamp's Bookmark List"" that Winamp installed.

So I followed the instructions and I got the "Space
Consumption Analysis" context menu command but when I
went to open a folder like My Pictures or My Music a
search window would open in its own window instead. So I
right-clicked the folder and saw that instead of "Open
being at the top of the context menu and in bold text it
was now "Search...". I don't understand why though. I
didn't even mess around with this when I was installing
the "Space Consumption Analysis" command.

With me so far? Here's where it gets a bit complicated...

When you click on "Advanced" in step 4 you get a list in
the "Actions:' box of commands. Selecting one and
clicking "Set Default" turns the command bold which I
ASSUME assigns a new command that gets used whenever you
double click a "file folder" file type. It's as if I
selected "Search..." from the "Actions:" box and
pressed "Set Default" myself which put it at the top of
the context menu box in bold when I did not do this. I
can't do this because both "Search..." and "Open" do not
even appear in the "Actions:" box for the "File folder"
file type. All folders and shortcuts to folders now have
to be opened by right-clicking them and clicking
on "Open," which is no longer bold. This is becoming VERY
annoying. What's weird is that the My Documents and My
Computer icons on the desktop and in the quick launch bar
(the icons just to the right on the START button) still
have "Open" at the top and in bold when I right-click
them. The My Pictures icon in the quick launch area that
I put there myself has "Search..." but the (C) Drive icon
(also in the quick launch area) that I also created
has "Open."

How do I change it back when I can't set "Open" as
default in that "Actions:" box (I'm ASSUMING that
setting "Open" to default will put it back like it used
to be)? I appreciate any help I can get. Thank you.

Jeremy

PS Also in the "Actions:" box for the "file folder" file
type are "Enqueue in Winamp" and "Add to Winamp's
Bookmark List" which I never use and don't want to see.
When I click on them in the box the "Remove" button to
the right DOESN'T darken (???) so I can't delete them.
How do I get rid of context menu commands I don't want?

You've exceeded your quota of questions. Ok, I read the programmer's documentation and run experiments..
