animation scheme & mouse click

In PPT 2003, when customizing an animation scheme that has been
applied to a slide, the task pane animation list shows a mouse icon
beside the individual elements of the scheme, implying that a mouse
click is required to advance to that element. Yet when previewing the
show in the Slide Show view no mouse click is required to advance to
each of these elements. They just occur one after the other. So the
Title placeholder animates, then the text placeholder paragraphs
animate one after the other -- no mouse clicking necessary. Can
someone explain why that mouse icon is there in the task pane list?

The mouse does indeed mean "on click"

However if you also set an automatic transition for the slide the clicks are
overridden. You cant have on click animations and auto transitions.

I thought that was the case, but found it hard to believe that PPT
wasn't smart enough to not display the mouse icon when the on click
option had been overridden? I realize that if I remove the automatic
transitions, the mouse click would come into play again, but surely (I
thought) PPT can distinguish between these two states and give me the
appropriate visual in the task pane list -- or maybe not.
