The anchor shows you to which paragraph your picture is attached. It will
not print or affect your document in any other way. I find it useful to see
where my pictures are attached because if you delete a paragraph that has an
anchor next to it, it means a picture will be deleted as well... But it
should only display when you select the picture, not merely hover on top of
it, unless there is a setting for this that I am unaware of.
If you really really want to hide the anchors, go to Tools > Option > View
Tab and in the Page and Web view section, uncheck the "anchor" checkbox.
