Hi,
I am using fat32 on xp home edition, when I try to defragment my HD I get a
message saying that certain files cannot be defragmented. I have reecently
tried a third party defragmenter (System Mechanic) and it tells me that I
have 3 files that cannot be defragmented in C:\documents and
settings\owner\NTUSER.DAT.LOG, when I try to access this, Notepad opens up
and says that I need to insert a disc in the drive, Why? I also have 126
file fragments that cannot be defragmented in my pagefile.sys and I am
receiving a high hazard warning (help menu says that this means that the
more fragmented the file is and the greater the performance hit your
computer will take when trying to access the file. Can anybody help me out
with this problem. I do realise that this might not be the right NG for this
problem but if I could sort this out using the XP defragmentation software
then that would be great.

Please if you can help Keep it Simple

Thanks

NTUSER.DAT.LOG I dont know about, but the rest is 'the
nature of the beast'. I got em, Bill G has em, ..
Like Pagefile is ur VM & is recreated on boot.
Thats the simple answer.

What is VM Larry? Thanks for the reply, so what you are saying is that
everybody has a pagefile.sys that cannot be defragmented?

Hi!
Use PerfectDisk from http://www.raxco.com and do a boot-time defrag.

Some files that are in use by the system cannot be accessed by anything
else (including the defragmenter) while the system is running. Usually
this is not of great importance. That LOG file is recording changes
made in the user part of the registry during the session and is one such
example (it will also not be a text file Notepad could handle anyway).

Fragmentation of the page file does not matter as much as some think,
but that many fragments is excessive. The way round is to go to
Control Panel - System - Advanced - Performance Settings - Advanced -
Virtual Memory. Click Change, and select the drive where it is (C if
you have not done anything). Highlight that, select 'no page file' and
click Set. OK out and immediately reboot, hitting F8 as BIOS info goes
to black, taking Safe Mode. Run the defragmenter in that, then put the
Virtual memory settings back (remembering to click that Set button) as
they were, to reboot with the page fie at least minimally fragmented

I thought pagefile is recreated on boot & so any frags
are lost. Wrong?

PCWorld Feb 04 P81 claims their tests found no
significant speed increase in latest PC's due to
defrag. My own experience with DI6 confirms this.
No URL yet 4 current issue.

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.
Thanks- bye- Larry

It will - but I think that if it is grossly fragmented this is because
the free space is, and it is being recreated into the fragments it was
in before. So having it in such an enormous number of fragments
indicates a lack of health. Defragging can be overdone, but it is not
good to have a new big data file or newly installed program scattered
around the disk in bits - it is bound to slow access to it. That's why
I like to get free space defragged, not worrying too much about a few
files left over in 2 or 3 pieces, or the page file where any access is
intermittent and random, direct to the sector without searching down the
file. And why I prefer Perfect Disk over Diskeeper (or the inbuilt
tool) , where the authors (Executive Software) deliberately do *not*
consolidate free space
