An unwanted blank space between characters

This one has got me puzzled. I've got a document, a list of
references, where at two locations among the four paragraphs an unwanted
single blank character space is appearing *in print,* but not on the
screen. And it's only in this document and its variations, not others.
It's always the same words no matter how I reformat the page, *except
when I force a line break the blanks disappear on the new line.

In one case it's between the two words "My supervisor." In the other,
in next paragraph, it's within the word 'Knowledgeable,' typically
between the n and o, but once between the o and w. I've checked font,
text effects and character spacing, and all appears normal. Font is
Univers 11 but changing it doesn't help. Printer is LJ4, but the
locations are not in line and change physically on the page with
reformatting, though both are always on right side of center (again,
forcing a line break eliminates the spaces). Other versions of the
same words print correctly elsewhere on the page. This file (and its
brethren) are older docs and maybe something is left over from earlier
formatting that doesn't appear on screen (formatting showing), but
otherwise I'm at a loss. Any other ideas where to look? Thanks.

I don't know if it's relevant, but there was an issue at some point where
spacing was erratic in paragraphs (maybe just headings?) that contained
specific symbol (upper Unicode) characters.

IF the list was copied from another location (web page, WordPerfect
document) it is possible that some extra codes came with it.
1. Select your Tools menu,
2. Select your Options command
3. Select the Compatibility Tab
4. Click the dropdown which probably says "Custom" or some other version
than the one you are using.
5. Change it to the version you are using. For instance, Word 2002, or
Word 2003.
6. Click OK
7. Now try printing.

If you are using Word 2007, then
Click the Microsoft Office Button (Round Icon in upper left corner)
Select Word Options
Select the Advanced Tab
Scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen.
Change the Lay out this document as if created in "Microsoft Office Word
2007"
Click OK
Now try printing.

I don't know if it's relevant, but there was an issue at some point

There are @ signs earlier in each of two lines, but then in others
too. I guess that might qualify as erratic. I condensed the
inter-character spacing by 4pts. Thanks.

Interesting idea. This is Word 2000 and it was set correctly. But
just to check your idea I changed it to Word 97 and saved, then back to
2000, and it printed ok. Thanks.

If you look at all the options in the Compatibility listing, there is
only 1 that *I* have ever found useful. That one is the "Do full
justification like WordPerfect 6x for Windows". WordPerfect changes how
text is smooshed together when the paragraph is justified.

All other settings have been problematic in one case or another.

Are compatibility options only document specific in Word 2000?

They can also be template specific. Compatibility Options are in every
version of Word I have worked with. (97 - 2007)

Sometimes copying and pasting text into a document can change an option.
