An error has occurred in Internet Explorer...

I receive the following message often:

An error has occurred in Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer will now
close. If you continue to experience problems, please restart your computer.

Does anyone know what might cause this? I am running XP SP1, IE 6.0. I
have reinstalled Internet Explorer using instructions from MS website. I
wonder how much of a reinstall I really did as much info seems to be
retained. Any help would be appreciated.

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See this link for information about malware:

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.

Thanks for the reply. Going through the reply, I have done much of it
already. I, along with everyone I know, have been trying to recapture my
computer after the escelating onslaught of x&%!!ware.
I have already implemented most of the unwanted.htm
I have purchased and used AdAware. I used AVG. But, I found that I wasn't
entirely sure of either one. What is cwshredder?
I really have been trying to download the 'Real' HijackThis, but suspect
scumware has been redirecting me. Your link was good and I have downloaded
the exe. I will try it tomorrow and upload my log tomorrow. (Too tired
fighting the dragons today.) HijackThis seems to really have a following.
I have purchased Nortons Internet Security which includes popup blocking and
ad blocking (than goodness), firewall, and virus scanning. This has restored
sanity to the household and seems to have stopped the proliferation of
problems.
But, I have several little plagues like this question addresses. Seems I
might have stopped the flood of virus/scumware, but there has been a bit of
damage left in the wake.

Thanks again for the reply, and I will persue the HijackThis tomorrow.

cwshredder is a program to eliminate CoolWebSearch and is explained at:

Thanks again for the info. I have downloaded HijackThis and CWShredder and
will run both today. I have registered for the Spyware forum and am getting
setup to report my results there. (I live in a motorhome and surf by cell
which means nites and weekends free minutes so must do this in steps.) I'll
keep posted on progress.
