AMD 64 / XP 64 Bit Edtion

S

Steve Drake

Hello,

I am buying a new AMD 64 Bit PC, its main role is going to be playing games
and the main game will be WOW.

I was thinking of loading windows xp 64bit edition, anyone use this for
gaming?

My thoughts are the OS will run faster but the game will run the same, I
will also use the PC for development and i can use 64Bit Dev tools so I am
happy with this.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

Just make sure that drivers are available for your main
components (video card, sound card, AGP bridge, etc),
and that those drivers are made with performance in mind.

I am also curious to find out if I should even bother upgrading from my 32bit
XP home edition to the XP64 professional. Will it help with Game play in a
MMORPG such as World of Warcraft or is it a waste of time? I feel I got the
technology but I am not using it to its full potential...Thanks

Hi Steve L.,

Here's a frew opinions about WoW and Windows x64:

"We found no performance differences between Windows 32-bit and Windows XP Pro x64 Edition."
http://www.hardocp.com/articleprint.html?article_id=765

"well since i never played WoW on Windows XP, im not sure and i dont believe there are any advantages of useing Windows XP x64 with
WoW, and as far as graphical if you've got a pretty good vid card you shouldnt have any issues. There were several bugs with playing
WoW on an x64 system but most have been taken care of, this included my system. But all in all, WoW works perfect on my system."

As with anything else, your mileage may vary..

Further info:

I do not believe you can "upgrade" the XP64. XP64 is OEM and OEM version do
not do upgrades.

yes, I read that it can only be installed over XP Professional too, not XP
home. But correct me if i'm wrong, I read that if I bought XP Pro. I can swap
it for XP64 afterwards through the website..
